5Preface
“I do not know how long I'll live but while I live–
Let me give some comfort to someone in need
By smile or a nod, a kind word or deed
And let me do whatever I can to ease things for my fellowmen.
I want naught but to do my part to ‘life’—
A tired or a weary heart
To change folk's frown to smile again
Then I will not have lived in vain
And I will not care how long I will live
If I can give and give a little happiness.”
I am very happy to present this book about the changes in ageing along with its problems, prevention and proper care. The aim is to make nurses, tutors and care givers to have a thorough knowledge about old people's problems and how to deal with them. I am justified in saying that this knowledge is less proficient or less cared for by all professionals. Hence, this book is an attempt to help the elderly people by making them live a happy life. If I am able to give them a little bit of happiness, I hope I will succeed in this venture.
The book will be useful for everyone who cares for the elderly people as well as for the nursing students to understand their responsibility towards caring for the aged in whatever setting they are and how to behave and act acordingly.
“When the sun has set and the night is on
When the darkness falls and the light is gone
You, my children or helpers—
Be my light and guide and lead me on;
When I am growing weak and my steps are faltering
When my hopes are bleak and my strength fails 6
My dear, you be my strength and hope
And lead me on to the end of my journey;
When my eyes grow dim and I cannot see
When there are no friends around me
You be my friend and comfort me;
When I cannot talk as there is no one for me
You be at my side and help me on
When I cannot walk and my end is nearing
You be at my side holding my hand and giving me courage.”
With these ideas in my mind, I have written this book. Hope this will enlighten everyone about how they can give some happiness to their near and dear ones.
