5Preface
Sociology is the youngest of all social sciences. As a teaching subject, it is becoming more popular. The Nursing Council has now included sociology in the second year of the basic BSc (Nursing) course with a brand new syllabus. This textbook has been prepared strictly as per the latest syllabus divided into 12 chapters.
The encouraging reception which the students and teachers have accorded to my previous books, has further inspired me to produce and present this book. I do hope that this book also will be able to win their favour and get a warm reception.
In writing this book, I have referred to and drawn much material from the works of a number of writers to whom I am extremely grateful. In order to be objective in the explanation of sociological concepts, I have profusely quoted sentences and statements of various sociologists to whom I am greatly indebted. Hence as an author, I do not wish to claim any originality to many of the ideas and descriptions contained in this book. But in all humility, I can say that I have presented the matter in my own way.
I must thank Shri Jitendar P Vij (Chairman and Managing Director), Mr Tarun Duneja (Director-Publishing) and the staff of Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, for their constant support and encouragement to publish this book.
Readers are most welcome to offer their valuable suggestions which will be of great help in improving the book in its next edition.
