5Foreword
This textbook of Forensic Odontology written by Dr KMK Masthan and his faculty members of Sree Balaji Dental College and Hospital, Chennai is the need to the hour since this subject has been introduced in the 5th year of new BDS curriculum. Forensic Odontology is not elaborately discussed in the existing textbooks of Oral Pathology.
The authors have done extensive spade work and have come out with a simple and easy-to-understand text form of this new discipline for the undergraduate students. The authors have been thorough, dedicated and detailed in the their academic expression.
I wish them all the best for this pioneer task and hope this book becomes the benchmark for other books in this discipline.

6Preface
Forensic odontology is a new discipline of forensic medicine from a dentist's view point. This has been introduced as a subject for 5th year of new BDS curriculum. A welcome move since this precise and voluminous subject can no longer be studied as a peripheral chapter in oral pathology.
The increasing importance of newer knowledge in forensic odontology is not adequately discussed in the existing textbooks of oral pathology and forensic medicine.
This book is the byproduct of one and half year spade work by the faculty of Department of Oral Pathology, Sree Balaji Dental College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. I am especially grateful to Dr Shankargouda Patil and Dr Jagadish Prasad Rajguru my postgraduate students for their sincere efforts in bringing out this book.
Through this book, only the tested and commonly accepted theories and hypotheses have been presented. We acknowledge that though this is sufficient for undergraduate students, may not be adequate for postgraduate students.
Lapses and ambiguities may have crept in, which we hope to correct in the further editions of this book. Your suggestions and feedback are welcome at masthankmk@yahoo.com
