To My parents and My nursing profession and My dear students
5Preface to the Second Edition
It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction to introduce the second edition of Nursing Administration to nursing community. In offering this title, I remain grateful to readers, who supported my all titles on nursing, i.e. Fundamentals of Nursing, Community Health Nursing; Medical Surgical Nursing, Midwifery and Reproductive Health Nursing; Paediatric Child Health Nursing; Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing; Nursing Education; Nursing Administration (1st edition), Nursing Research and Nursing Theories.
At present, the nursing profession is profoundly affected by changes in society. Now rapid changes occurring with an increase in better educated personnel and increased technology to handle administrative functions brought about a focus on leadership. The book on Nursing Administration are very rare. Previously we use to refer to books on management which were written purely from the view point of industrial and business enterprises. There were no Indian author has ventured into this area of nursing administration. For which, I have made an honest attempt to fill the gap by writing a title on “Nursing Administration” that is tailored to the conditions and situation existing today.
My main idea of designing this book on Nursing Administration is to give more contents, i.e. concepts of administration and management to all our nurses to equip themselves for better management of their clients and also develop themselves in the field of nursing. So in this text I have tried my level best to provide content materials more than the requirements to update their skills in their respective areas of service.
Now the new millennium has become metaphor for the extraordinary challenges and opportunities available to the nursing profession and also to the institutions responsible for preparing our next generation as nurse administrators. Transformation taking place in nursing and nursing administration have been driven by major socioeconomic factors as well as development in the health care and professional issues of nursing. So there is a great need of the day to determine the content in terms of roles expected of a nurse for health care needs and aspirations of the public and the advances in medical science and technology including nursing science and technology. The purpose of this book is to assimilate this insight from nurse and nursing administration into well-established concepts and to prepare the nursing students for their career with concepts. Management skills are as important to nurse administrators as their clinical knowledge and skills and also it covers and serves the purpose of the syllabi prescribed by statutory bodies and universities, who offer degrees in nursing.
This book has been designed to teach nursing students about the management process and leadership, and to supply the practicing nurse with practical information about nursing administration. I have tried to provide within the covers of a single volume composite material that includes general concepts of administration and their application in nursing administration which has been so far lying scattered in various sources to nurse administrators and nursing students who are aspiring to become administrators or managers in their respective settings. As the managerial roles being assumed by clinical nurses are the result of requirements to push decision making to lower level of the organization and encourages nurse to determine the ways in which the health care delivery system can best function.
I hope all readers feel free to continue any dialogue in relation to nursing and nursing administration or comment on any aspect of this title and how it can be improved. And I am aware of manifold reason, errors might be crept in and shall feel oblige, if such errors are brought to my notice for taking proper action. Once again, I sincerely welcome constructive criticism from readers that would help me to enrich my knowledge. I greatly appreciate your willingness to share your thoughts and suggestions with me, and good suggestions will be considered for incorporation in the next edition.

6Preface to the First Edition
It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction in presenting a text on Nursing Administration to our nursing community and concerned team.
Today nurses are challenged to take part in management of health care delivery system as they are the main qualified human resource force in the health services management at all levels. In any health care institution, i.e. hospital, nurses have entrusted to management of the individual patients in the ward or unit or department and also made responsible to shoulder the responsibility and accountability to the concerned in their nursing practice. In the field of nursing the modern concept of management and administration is very well needed to provide best possible nursing service to the patients. Administration becoming a major force in nursing and is being used to change practices, I believe that the modern concept of administration and management is very essential to handle or ideal with day-to-day problem promptly. Recognizing the need for our Indian nurses and nursing students. I conceived the idea for writing this book since there is no such effort made by any Indian author.
As you know, that I have already published two books on nursing, i.e. Community Health Nursing Research, which have been well accepted and become popular among nursing community. This book is written in a simple language and lucid style covering the concept of administration and management required by the nurses of all categories and also the subject dealt keeping in view of the improved syllabus, enabling the nursing students for better understanding the concept of administration, i.e. planning, organizing, staffing, directing, coordinating, reporting, budgeting, etc. and also applying the same in the field of nursing.
An earnest attempt has been made not only to give enough exposure of nursing administration and management process for better understanding of administrative concept to the students but also to the faculty handling the subject in teaching institutions.
I am aware that for manifold reasons, errors might have crept in and shall feel obliged, if such errors are brought to my notice and suggestions for improvement would be gratefully accepted. I sincerely welcome constructive criticism from nursing administrators, nursing educators, nursing students and nurses who are working at all level, which will help me to enrich myself. Good comments and suggestions will be incorporated in next revised edition.
