7Preface
Why do we need a book on Modern Ophthalmic Operation Theatres?
There are several books available on various ophthalmic sub-specialities, but none serves the operation theatre requirements.
An operation theatre plays a very crucial role in managing patients with various ophthalmic ailments.
Maintaining and running an operation theatre successfully is a Herculean task. The aim of compiling this book is to provide a “one-stop” reference for the major requirements of an ophthalmic operation theatre.
In this book we have tried to include the basic aspects and requirements of an operation theatre and have also dealt with management of infections.
This book has been divided into 8 chapters with subdivisions in each of them for easy understanding of the text. A detailed legend is provided for all the photographs.
The operation theatre staff at Sankara Nethralaya have put in lot of effort to bring quality surgical care to our patients. This book is a compilation of that effort and experience spanning a period of 25 years.
Note: This book stating our preferred surgical practice patterns with the detailed commentary.

9Acknowledgements
The idea of compiling this book stemmed from a continuing medical education programme conducted at Rotary Charitable Eye Hospital, Sirsi, Karnataka. Dr SS Badrinath, President and Chairman Emeritus, Medical Research Foundation, Chennai, Tamil Nadu was invited as a guest speaker for this continuing medical education programme on Ideal Ophthalmic OT and it's Maintenance. Dr Badrinath participated in this programme by tele-conferencing from Sankara Nethralaya, via satellite link.
I would like to first and foremost thank Dr SS Badrinath, for being the guiding spirit behind this monograph. Without his encouragement, it would not have seen the light of the day.
This book is a compilation of thoughts of the speakers on the occasion (namely Dr KR Murthy, Dr Umesh Megur, Dr MS Ravindra, Dr Ramamohan Rao, Dr Jayanth Rao, Dr Prashant Isloor, Dr Satyamurthy, Dr Krishna Prasad and Dr Shivaram KV, Dr MM Joshi and their team of consultants from Padmanayanalaya, Hubli) and the prevalent practices in the operation theatres of Sankara Nethralaya.
I sincerely thank Dr Shivaram KV and Dr Chandrashekar MG for their effort to conduct the CME and their cooperation to get this compilation.
Compiling this book was a team effort of the entire Operation Theatre and Housekeeping staff without whose valuable input and cooperation it would not have been possible to put together.
I would like to thank Dr Bhanulakshmi Inder Mohan, Director of Anaesthesia Services, Sankara Nethralaya, for giving inputs, comments and proofreading of the book several times, without a sigh or grimace. She has also contributed to the chapter on anaesthesia for ophthalmic eye surgery and patient care in the operating rooms.
I would also like to thank the core OT team from the Nursing department for providing men and materials, especially Mr Suresh Kumar, Mrs Lysa Sagar, 10Mrs Alice Math, Mrs Venkatammal, Mrs Sharmila and Mr A Mahalingam whom I constantly interacted with to obtain very useful information regarding preferred ophthalmic surgical practice patterns. Mrs Sharmila also provided valuable input.
I would like to thank Col (Retd) N Raghavan, Manager, Projects, whose input on the design of modern operation theatres was most valuable.
I would like to thank Dr Muna Bhende, Consultant, Department of Vitreo-retinal Surgery, for her input on managing a patient with endophthalmitis. I would also like to thank Prof HN Madhavan, Dr Lily Therese, Dr Malathi and Ms Margarita from the Department of Microbiology for input on PCR, excellent photographs of microbiological specimens and microbiological investigations in endophthalmitis and air sampling techniques in the OT.
I would like to thank Ms Anjali Bagati, Technical Service Head, 3M India, for her excellent input and allowing us to use photographs and also for helping us to bring out this monograph on Modern Ophthalmic Operation Theatres.
My sincere thanks to the secretarial staff, Mrs Bhavani, Mrs Preetha, Mr Senthil and Mr Manoj.
My thanks to the entire Multimedia team especially Mr Deenadhayalan for taking excellent photographs, Mr Elango for scanning the photographs.
