5Preface to the Second Edition
It is four years since the 1st edition of the book was published. It is time to have the second edition of the book, in view of the recent developments in the field of biochemistry, as well the good response the book has received at home and abroad during this time.
Like the 1st edition, the book is intended primarily for medical and dental students. However, it also meets the needs of students of life sciences who study biochemistry as a separate subject, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Almost all chapters have been rewritten, with many new illustrated diagrams to help understand concepts.
All efforts have been made to make this book as comprehensive as possible. There is always scope for improvement. Constructive suggestions are welcome from all quarters that will enable us to make the book more useful in the subsequent editions.

6Preface to the First Edition
This book is intended primarily for medical and dental students. However, it also meets the needs of students of life sciences who study biochemistry as a separate subject, both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
In this book an effort has been made to illustrate concepts of biochemistry using multicolored sketch diagrams.
A new chapter has been included on Molecular Tools in Medicine to give a glimpse of advances made in biochemistry that have direct application in modern day medicine.
All efforts have been made to make this book as comprehensive as possible. There is always scope for improvement. Constructive suggestions are welcome from all quarters that will enable us to make the book more useful in the subsequent editions.
