5Preface to the Fifth Edition
Once again, Almighty bestowed an opportunity to bring about the current innovation in the text. Treatment perceptions of STDs were considered paramount, for which ‘World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for the treatment of STDs’ were taken stock of. Accordingly, they were imbibed in the respective disease(s) to facilitate their use in day-to-day practice. Furthermore, it was considered worthwhile to provide an acceptable alternative. ‘Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for the treatment of sexually transmitted infections (appendix 10) is a viable document for the purpose. Besides, references are updated in accordance to ‘Pubmed, US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health,’ and are arranged to match the modified Vancour style. Surely, the current edition should evoke renewed interest in the subject amongst under- and postgraduates, and practicing physicians.
The instant assistance given by Dr Sambit N Bhattacharya, Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology, STD and Leprosy, UCMS and GTB Hospital, Delhi and Dr Vibhu Mendiratta, Professor and Head, Department of Dermatology, STD and Leprosy, Lady Harding Medical College, and Associated Smt Sucheta Kriplani and Kalawati Saran Children Hospitals, New Delhi, is greatly appreciated. My computer assistant Shailender Sehgal laboriously executed the organization of the final version of the text of the book.

7Preface to the First Edition
The book is based on the didactic lectures and clinical demonstrations on venereal diseases, which the author has been giving to undergraduate and also to postgraduate students. The contents of the text conform to the curricula for undergraduates of different universities. It is concise, succinct, and aptly illustrated. Emphasis has, however, been placed on the classic clinical features of common venereal diseases. Essentials of diagnostic procedures, the treatment, and also follow-up have been clearly outlined. The present challenges of these diseases are described under epidemiology, while their control status, and prospective planning for prevention is delineated separately. The book is written primarily for the students; it is hoped, however, that it may be useful also to the practising physicians, for venereal diseases are sparingly described in books of medicine.
