Foreword
Knowledge of Embryology—the branch which deals with the development of human body—is essential for all levels of practitioners of medicine. The clinicians need comprehensive knowledge of embryology to determine and interpret numerous developmental and congenital defects.
It is needless to emphasize that until recent times such knowledge of well-orchestrated happenings within the womb had to be more by extension of imagination unlike other branches like Gross Anatomy and Histology wherein students get to access material for direct study.
Present-day medical education has drawn significant advantages by the application of technology—photomicrographs, models, computer-assisted animations, Internet images.8
This handbook prepared by Dr Roopa Kulkarni, Dr Varsha Mokhari and Dr Shailaja Shetty—my faculty colleagues at MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru, India is the product of their firm commitment to enable an average undergraduate student to easily understand, analyze and interpret the development.
The communication of exciting ideas in a subject to make it simple and comprehendible is more important than the mere acquisition of detailed facts. “Duty makes us do things well and love makes us to do beautifully”.
I am grateful to Almighty, for this privilege of presenting this foreword to this simple presentation, which I am confident, will make most medical students—postgraduates confident and comfortable in their approach to this subject.

9Preface
The subject ‘Human Embryology’ is the basis for understanding the human anatomy. It is the most essential subdivision which helps to understand various clinical subjects. Therefore, the content of the subject cannot be reduced. The hurdle in understanding Embryology is to imagine the developmental stages. Moreover, the subject is vast and the duration for learning normal Human Embryology by medical students in the first phase is reduced from one and half years to one year. Therefore, it was thought to make the subject Human Embryology simple, easily understandable and reproducible with the help of the models which give three-dimensional visualization.
In this regard, the authors express their deep sense of gratitude to all those who have inspired and created interest in Human Embryology and the modelers who have taken pains to bring the structures to near reality with proportionate magnification of various parts of the embryo and the fetus.
The development of human being is so fascinating that the efforts which are made in bringing out this book will not only help in understanding and performance in the examination but also kindle the interest in exploring more about the development of the human body.
