IntroductionCHAPTER 1

2
Dear friends,
Welcome to the world of biostatistics. I congratulate you for purchasing this book.
Statistics is considered as boring subject (“If I had only one day left to live, I would live it in my statistics class: it would seem so much longer”). General consensus is that statistics is difficult to understand (“have you heard about the statistics joke gone horribly wrong? Even the undergraduate could understand it”).
I do believe that understanding of statistics is easy but it should be taught in different way. So this book has been written with the purpose of understanding the concepts of biostatistics.
In this book, we will learn the skill of selection of appropriate statistical tests. Various books related to the “how to use” of test of significance are available but very few of them are dealing with selection of appropriate test. Nowadays, various statistical softwares are also available but to use them we must know which test to choose for our data?
So most important thing for analysis of any data is to know which test of significance should be used. In this book we will try to explore this concept.
Selection of any test of significance involves three basic steps:
  1. What kind of data we are dealing with?
  2. Whether our data are following the normal distribution or not?
  3. Selection of appropriate statistical test.

So, first of all it is necessary to understand the types of data.
