8Foreword
It gives me great pleasure in writing the foreword for this book ‘Obstetric and Gynecological Emergencies’ being brought out at the fourteenth Practical Course in Obstetrics and Gynecology by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maulana Azad Medical College.
An appropriate and timely action by the residents while dealing with obstetric and gynecological emergencies will save life. The distinguished faculty at MAMC has drawn heavily on their vast clinical experience and in-depth scientific knowledge in compiling this comprehensive yet explicit discussion on different emergency case scenarios as seen in the casualty.
The book constitutes 43 chapters spread out over 400 pages and is divided into three sections. Each chapter is well laid out and written in an easy-to-understand format.
The book is written with focus on practical and academic needs of both postgraduate students and practicing consultants. It provides a convenient source of information and a practical guideline for ready reference in the management of challenging emergency situations in the casualty.
I congratulate and compliment the efforts put in by the Faculty members and the Editors in bringing out this excellent practical discourse on emergency management of common obstetric and gynecological conditions and I am sure it will prove to be of great use to everyone.

9Preface
Once again, the faculty at Maulana Azad Medical College has come together to combine their extensive scientific knowledge and vast clinical experience to bring forth this book on Obstetric and Gynecological Emergencies.
Though the management of emergency situations in medical practice remains the same everywhere, the speciality of Obstetrics and Gynecology stands apart for two reasons. First, it is the only speciality in which a single emergent event can threaten the lives of two individuals, the mother and her fetus. Second, it is the only speciality where an otherwise completely healthy woman may succumb purely to a pregnancy related complication.
The resident doctor posted in the casualty, who is the first person to face such a situation, needs to be aware of the varying emergency clinical presentations she might encounter and how to proceed towards a diagnosis so that prompt corrective action can be taken. This book was conceptualized with this thought in mind.
We have constructed a collection of nearly 100 true case scenarios as one sees them in the casualty, the main objective being to provide a convenient source of information in the ‘emergency hour.
It has been divided into three sections, the first dealing with commonly encountered emergency situations in Obstetrics, the second dealing with emergency situations in Gynecology and the third dealing with situations common to both Obstetrics and Gynecology.
We have included chapters on postpartum collapse, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, diabetic ketoacidosis, newborn resuscitation and medicolegal issues related to Obstetrics and Gynecology written by experts in these fields. The editors are grateful to them for their clinical and intellectual inputs.
This book is a coordinated effort by all the contributors. The opportunity to edit it has not only been a challenge but also an enjoyable learning experience for us. We hope you will find the content as enlightening as we have found it.
With humility, we offer our sincere thanks to all our patients … for without patients, how can a doctor treat.
