11Foreword
Preterm Prelabor Rupture of Membranes in a Low Resource Setting is a condition which may be associated with a high perinatal morbidity and mortality. Appropriate management is important to reduce the perinatal morbidity and mortality. The management also depends very much on the clinical settings, as well as the facilities and expertise available and it may vary in different regions of the world. I am glad that Professor Shyam V Desai and Dr Parikshit Tank had taken the initiative to get together a group of international experts to write the various chapters and organize the publication of this Handbook on Preterm Prelabor Rupture of Membranes in a Low Resource Setting. This book will provide useful and comprehensive guidance to the frontline workers in Obstetrics and Gynecology to help them to manage this important and challenging condition. I would like to congratulate and thank Professor Desai, Dr Tank and all the contributors for the excellent work they have done for AOFOG.

13Foreword
This Handbook on Preterm Prelabor Rupture of Membranes in a Low Resource Setting is very important from the Obstetrician's point of view. It concerns one of the 5 Ps, i.e. postpartum hemorrhage, preterm labor, pregnancy hypertension, PROM and parturition problems which cause most of the maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity not only in the AOFOG federation but also in the whole world. This handbook looks at the disease from an Asian perspective. Most of the literature on the topic have been from a Western view and it is refreshing to look at it from another angle. The AOFOG is committed to the spread of education amongst our member nations and this serves as an example of EDUCATION, this time through a publication.
It would be naive to think the PPROM problem will be solved by this handbook but this hopefully will be the FIRST STEP among many to help us understand the disease and then institute steps to control the problems associated with it.
I am grateful for the opportunity to write this foreword. I thank all who contributed their energy, time and talent to this handbook.

15Preface
The problem of preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes is a problem encountered worldwide; however, in practice, one finds that the factors associated with its occurrence are often linked to inadequate supervision during the antenatal period. In a “Low Resource Setting” where facilities for intensive neonatal care are lacking and there are several such in our region, the problem becomes even more serious as the obstetrician is in a dilemma whether to deliver the preterm baby of conserve the pregnancy till such time the maturity is close to 34 or 35 weeks.
We have asked eminent members of our specialty from seven countries to give their valuable inputs of various aspects of the problem and we thank them for their efforts in helping us to bring out this publication.
The literature on the topic is vast and controversial points in the management have been well brought out by the authors as you will see.
We had two of our senior and distinguished members of the AOFOG Prof Y Murata and Prof Rohit Bhatt who served as Peer Reviewers and we thank them for their guidance and efforts.
We have made a beginning and hope to add a few more publications on behalf of the AOFOG in the future.
