First edition of the book Atlas of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology was published in October 2009 and was awarded the Outstanding Book of the Year Award, 2010 by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) based on the criteria of quality, originality of content, contribution to science and technology and the thoroughness of documentation.
As President of the National Academy of Science and Technology, I am happy to note that on the third year after publication, this Atlas will now be published with a world-wide readership as target because of a need for easily understandable reading in pediatric and adolescent gynecology by healthcare providers. The presentation of actual cases supplemented with ample elucidating pictures done in most chapters makes the readers learn more about the diseases being discussed. Local statistics are retrieved to show the myriad and wealth of cases seen in the Philippines.
The nineteen (19) chapters were written by 16 authors who are guardians of the pioneering specialty of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, the first and only one established in 2002 at the Philippine Children's Medical Center. The specialists include: pediatric gynecologists, pediatric oncologists, urologists, endocrinologists, geneticists and adolescent specialists who are recognized leaders in their fields.
The content, the style and elegance of the book bespeaks of a genuine and enviable collaboration of the contributors. The ATLAS treats the child and the adolescent as distinct individuals with personal needs and rights that merits care and respect.
I therefore enjoin you all to read, understand and enjoy the ATLAS.

9Preface to the Second Edition
The creation of the Atlas of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, the first such publication in the Philippines, was received well not only by colleagues in the practice of Pediatric Gynecology and Pediatrics, but also those in the Allied Specialties, Academe, and those in the peripheral sectors dealing with social problems of children.
The Atlas received the Outstanding Book Award for 2010 from the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines on July 15, 2010, 9 months after its launching in October 20, 2009.
This second edition will be published and distributed worldwide by Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd. Some changes are made to make the images clearer (black and white photos are replaced with colored ones); ultrasound pictures enhanced and some chapters improved.
Out of the 350 pictures in this Atlas, 70% are now printed in color. In contrast to the 1st edition where only 50% of the pictures were printed in color to save the cost of printing.

11Preface to the First Edition
A malfunctioning computer, the threat of losing valuable pictures and data of patients, led to the development of this ATLAS. The pictures and data were quickly retrieved and transferred to CDs for review. The idea of preserving them for teaching purposes evolved. Ultrasound pictures were retrieved together with the histopathological slides of diagnosed tumors, vaginoscopy and laparoscopy videos, videos and still pictures of surgeries (laparotomies and vaginal repairs of malformations of the genital tract). These were all collated and the authors selected those that had teaching values; those that were relatively rare and those that had good follow-up.
Other specialists from other institutions such the National Institute of Health, University of the Philippines, UP Child Protection Unit, Makati Medical Center and St. Luke's Medical Center were tapped to contribute to the Atlas. Other colleagues that form part of the multidisciplinary team of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Unit of the Philippine Children's Medical Center, such as the Pediatric Urologist and Adolescent Medicine specialists, were invited to write a chapter. A graphic artist, with the guidance of the authors, was hired to sketch the majority of the 27 illustrations found listed before the index.
The 19 chapters truly represent the collaborative effort of 16 specialists of varied expertise in the care of girls with gynecologic problems in the Philippines. More than 300 pictures, 50% of which are in color, and 27 illustrations are worth preserving in a book form not only for teaching purposes but for providing evidences for medical students, general medical practitioners, pediatricians, gynecologists, surgeons, parents and the girls themselves. There is hope of survival for those with cancer. Fertility can be preserved with proper diagnosis. Reconstructive and restorative surgery of the genital tract can provide sexual function. Most important of all, if you don't look for it, you won't find it—a lesson to be learned in doing a thorough examination of a girl even as a newborn and in early infancy, so that measures can be done before it is too late.
