I must at the onset apologize to my esteemed readers the lapse over the last five years in bringing out this volume. This has been the period of transition, the transfer from one institution to the other and finally taking time to settle down in the new scenario of the rural institution and trying to contribute my bit here.
Keeping the ongoing need of the practicing gynecologists and postgraduate students of the subcontinent in mind, an attempt has been made to discuss current issues of interest.
Medical field is progressing very fast with the development of different diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for early diagnosis and better treatment of the patient. In obstetrics, we require to take extra care because we deal with two patients simultaneously, the mother and the fetus.
This book deals with practical aspects of routine obstetrics like management of fetal growth restriction, perinatal asphyxia and resuscitation, anemia, exercise during pregnancy, etc. along with newer advancements like laparoscopic interventions during pregnancy, cord blood stem cells, uses of nitric oxide donors, etc.
It is said that obstetrics and gynecology is fundamentally concerned with sexual activity and procurement, therefore, we have included topics like sex during pregnancy, female sexuality, and tubal surgery.
Adolescence is a delicate period of transition between childhood and adulthood, where the adolescent is neither a child nor an adult, not being able to understand which way to go. This group in addition to lack of information and confusion related to their physical changes and changes in their psyche, are accompanied with specific problems related to primary care problems of adolescents as anemia, premenstrual syndrome, breast problems and ovarian cancers and vaginal discharge for which they seek medical advice.
Finally, I must bring on record to the contribution of my co-editors, Narendra and Shikha, who not only helped in the preparation of this volume but were to a large extent responsible for waking me out of my slumber. My better-half, Dr (Mrs) Manju Nagrath, Department of Radiodiagnosis, Rural Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Saifai, Etawah, UP, India, who has stood by me, tolerating my hours of frustration and its manifestations and constantly encouraging me to keep up my endeavors and see this work through completion.
