The incidence of infertility has continued to rise over the last few decades and it is estimated that it affects at least 11% of couples of reproductive age. Many women are choosing to have children later in life, after they have established their careers and achieved financial security. Unfortunately, the biological time clock does not match these socioeconomic choices. Infertility is an emotionally traumatic life event. It can adversely affect the couple's or woman's emotional, spiritual, psychological and physical well-being.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a common therapeutic modality in infertility. It is considered to be an intermediate step of low-to-moderate complexity, attempted before the application of more sophisticated assisted reproductive technologies like in vitro fertilization (IVF), with or without intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). It is very popular amongst gynecologists and performed regularly even at lower levels of care. Yet, the success rates of this simple procedure are often below expectations and disappointing. It is the sensitive area of uncertainty and unanswered questions that we have tried to explore. The book has brought together all the diverse aspects of IUI through the contribution by various authors who have been experts in this discipline for a long time.
However, a book written by many is naturally prone to have lack of continuity with non-uniformity in presentation and divergence of views. We have tried to prevent overlapping and break in continuity, with simultaneous stress on the widely-accepted concepts. The presentation has been made uniform as far as possible. We hope, the book can provide a clear and concise aspect of how, when, why and therefore of IUI and help you navigate the procedure smoothly and successfully.
The book is brought out under the aegis of RN Ganguly Foundation, Kolkata, West Bengal, India, which apart from engaging in social work, helping students, arranging free health check-ups and public awareness programs, also endeavorers towards academic excellence by organizing CMEs for doctors and publishing books. Genital Tuberculosis published in 2010 was the first medical book under this banner.
