5Preface to the Second Edition
We are glad to present the second edition of our book entitled Laboratory Manual for Practical Biochemistry before our worthy students and learned teachers. The book has been revised in the light of latest pattern of syllabus prescribed by the Health Universities of India. Practical exercises have been selected according to the Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines.
Biochemistry is a rapidly advancing subject with latest developments in the areas such as molecular diagnostics, automation of laboratory procedures, thrust given for quality control and the increasing dependence on biochemical tests in clinical decision making. Considering these developments, we have included topics such as laboratory equipments, glassware, laboratory hazards, automation and quality control in this edition of laboratory manual. We have also tried to enrich the readers by adding chapters on assays of calcium, alkaline phosphatase, vitamins and urinary proteins. Incorporation of photographs of osazones, few laboratory tests and hemin crystals, is an added feature of this laboratory manual.
We hope that this book will meet the requirement of undergraduate students studying biochemistry. We will be glad to accept constructive criticism and suggestions from the faculty, students and readers to make this book a better one in subsequent editions.

7Preface to the First Edition
Knowledge of practical aspects of biochemistry is essential for a medical student to understand diagnostic and prognostic status of any ailment. We have always felt the need for a complete and comprehensive book on orientation towards various aspects of practical biochemistry. This book is written in simple language, covering the practical syllabus for mbbs, bds, bsc MLT and BSc nursing students as per the curriculum and guidelines of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bengaluru, Karnataka, India and most of other Health Universities in India. The book includes both theory and practical aspects of clinical biochemistry. A clear-cut practical concept has been offered in the book in respect of all qualitative and quantitative experiments. Chapters on demonstration experiments such as colorimetry, electrophoresis, chromatography, etc. are also included. Questions at the end of each chapter and normal values of various biochemical parameters in blood and urine are also included in this book.
