9Foreword
It is a great pleasure to write a “Foreword” for Dr Mittal's book on Recent Advances in Cardiothoracic Surgery–I. I have observed the academic development of Dr Mittal with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction. He has been my student for more than a decade of his medial education. He has an important contributions to the cardiovascular literature from his undergraduate days.
I am, therefore, not surprised that he has now authored, this book and many more to come.
Recent Advances in Cardiothoracic Surgery–I is a well-researched monograph. Dr Mittal has done his homework and chosen to include all in this volume, chapters that really beg to draw the attention of contemporary cardiothoracic surgeons.
It is a timely reminder and updates the practicing surgeons, on a number of important aspects.
The chapter on pulmonary function test (PFT) is a reminder to cardiovascular surgeons to pay attention to the lungs, which are truly complimentary neighbors of the heart, but have a profound influence on the outcomes of cardiovascular surgery. Interpretation of pulmonary function test results requires this new tutotrial. Thoracic trauma has been dealt with reasonable attention to current practice trends.
The chapter on percutaneous valve implants is appropriate, timely and highlights both the need for and limitations of technological progress in this specialty. Myocardial preservation clearly updates the practicing surgeon on the current practice. The chapter on valve sparing aortic surgery is well-researched. It provides the necessary information on the techniques that are current.
The three chapters on right ventricular function, PET and TEE appraise the modern surgeon on the need for these diagnostic modalities, which ultimately influence the decisions on the surgical procedures, postoperative care and the final outcome.
Dr Mittal has appropriately chosen the Fontan procedure and pediatric myocardial preservation to keep the readers' interest and include variety. The choice of chapters clearly indicates an interest in the reader, who may find the variety interesting and absorbing while being educative. I am sure that forthcoming issues would have a similar variety to interest the researchers, the adult surgeons, the pediatric surgeons, anesthesiologists and intensivists, who form the modern team to provide quality outcomes.
The book should be an essential companion to all ranks of cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists and the intensivists. Finally, it has been a privilege to read and acknowledge with pride my student's accomplishments 10which he has achieved early in his career. I shall look forward to future editions, while congratulating Dr Mittal on this fine effort and wish him the very best for future academic accomplishments.

11Preface
The field of cardiac sciences has made significant progress over last few decades in the diagnosis and management of various fatal conditions. These advances have made possible considerable decrease in morbidity and mortality of conditions once considered fatal.
The book Recent Advances in Cardiothoracic Surgery–I has been conceptualized to provide up-to-date knowledge on topics that are not so well described in cardiothoracic surgery texts.
When I was a resident, I had considerable difficulty in getting updated knowledge on so many topics. The book has been specially written for providing cardiothoracic and vascular surgery residents the updated knowledge on topics often neglected and asked in examinations. The language has been kept simple to enhance the understandability and retention on the topics.
This text can also be used by surgeons who aspire to pursue the specialty and will help them in entrance. The practicing surgeons can also use this text as an easy way to update their existing knowledge. It is intended to be released each year with separate topics of current importance and research.
I like to thank Dr Rajesh Chand Arya, Consultant Cardiac Anesthesiologist, Dayanand Medical College (DMC) Heart Institute, Ludhiana, Punjab, India and Major General M Luthra, Professor, Department of Cardiac Surgery, Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, Maharashtra, India, for their contributions.
