7Preface to the Second Edition
Clinical care and imaging of patients with diffuse lung disease is a very challenging proposition. The specific diagnosis is difficult to make in the isolation either clinically or by imaging alone.
The best approach, I have found and as also emphasized by various authors, is to have a multidisciplinary outlook.
A combined approach also helps in reaching the conclusion in cases, where high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) abnormalities are likely to be subclinical. Furthermore, with close consultation between the clinicians and the radiologists and due attention to atypical features, it is more likely that alternative diagnoses such as malignant and chronic infections can be ruled out.
In this book, I have tried to compile all the relevant findings of various thoracic diseases in a way to formulate a reasonable differential diagnosis in combination with relevant clinical features to guide the pulmonology and radiology residents in day-to-day practice.

8Preface to the First Edition
Lung diseases derive their designation from their anatomical location within the support structures of the lungs, or within the alveolar walls, or within the airways and air spaces of the lung. Detecting diffuse lung infiltrates on chest radiography is a common clinical problem. Many diverse pathological processes can cause diffuse lung disease. The presentation of these diseases can vary from acute to chronic and includes a wide array of radiological patterns that are optimally evaluated on high-resolution computed tomography of the chest.
Designed for easy reference, this thoroughly illustrated, portable handbook is a practical guide to performing and interpreting imaging studies of the chest. The first section reviews the fundamentals of high-resolution CT and presents chest CT protocols along with anatomy. The second section provides an overview of focal and diffuse lung disease.
The third section presents succinct, key facts about all commonly encountered pathologic entities, along with representative images and explanatory captions arranged in alphabetical order.
