5Preface
Dermatology has become an integral part of medical students' training, as nearly 10 per cent of all the patients, visiting the general physicians have skin diseases. With advances in the diagnosis and treatment, it has become possible to treat nearly all the skin diseases. Newer therapeutic tools can now treat even the diseases which were considered incurable earlier. With this book, we wish to provide a comprehensive approach to recognise, diagnose and treat the common skin diseases encountered in the day-to-day clinical practice.
In this edition, every chapter has been thoroughly revised and updated with the addition of available information. Some newer methods of diagnosis and treatment have been incorporated while retaining some of the previous material and deleting the outdated ones. Several new photographs have been introduced and a new completely revised appendix has been put in place of ready-reference to various common drugs with their trade names and compositions. The book is especially meant for undergraduate students, general practitioners and practicing dermatologists.

7Acknowledgements
We are very grateful to many people for their direct and indirect support to bring out this edition. To name a few, Dr R Mahesh, Dr Laxmishanker, Dr Anshul Avijit and Dr Amit Malhotra have helped us in the preparation for the study material. Mr Prem Rana and Mr Satya Prakash helped with secretarial assistance and Mr Mahesh Sharma helped in various ways. Dr Kamna Verma (Dr Kaushal Verma's wife) has been always very supportive even at the expense of other important commitments and the daughter Khyati silently supported with curiosity, while preparing the manuscript. We trust that the book will be fully utilised by the undergraduate students, practicing physicians and dermatologists as much as the previous editions.
