There is no dearth of books on Sociology. However, there is need for many more because the subject is wide and varied. Every family is unique, every village has its own culture and every state has its own language. This book does not attempt to fulfill that requirement. As name (and size) of the book aptly indicates, it is not a treatise on the subject. The objective of the book is neither to wean medical and paramedical students away from in-depth study of the subject nor to prevent learning it through interactive sessions in the classrooms. No book can take away the role of a teacher. Still every examination system requires a handbook that a student needs to revise the subject. The book aims to fill that gap. We would like to make the book more user-friendly, and for that suggestions and criticism from the readers are more than welcome.

We express, sincere gratitude to our parents and teachers. We also learnt from our families, friends, colleagues and many by whom, we had opportunity to work, play and walk with. We are grateful to all ‘these and those’. The real learning is in classroom, and we understand, one learns better when he/she is on the other side of podium; hence our indebtness to our students.
No author forgets his first publisher; we also will not. Our acknowledgment to Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Managing Director), Mr Tarun Duneja (Director-Publishing), Mrs Samina Khan (PA to Director-Publishing), Mr KK Raman (Production Manager), Mr Sunil Kumar Dogra (Production Executive), Mr Neelambar Pant (Production Coordinator), Dr Mohd Naved (Senior Proofreader), Rakesh Kumar (Typesetter) and other staff of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for their untiring efforts.fm10
