Biochemistry and Biophysics is a growing enterprise worldwide, driven primarily by the widespread realization of the major contribution that can be made to biological and medical science including nursing. Traditionally nurses were involved in practicing several biochemical and biophysical principles in healthcare delivery without an optimal understanding of the subjects. It is to be realized that an increased utilization of biochemical and metabolic principles as well as techniques in healthcare discipline have raised the necessity of learning biochemistry and biophysics for the nurses. Because of this, the Indian Nursing Council has incorporated Biochemistry and Biophysics as an integral subject in syllabus of Post Basic BSc Nursing Program in recent past. This has been done in order to enhance the learning in this subject because there has been a limited exposure in this discipline at the entry level of basic diploma nursing program.
It would be important to point out here that in an era of Critical Care Medicine, different types of ICUs in different medical specialities and sub-specialities (subserved by the nurses), they remain devoid of training related with biochemical changes of sick human body, which seems injudicious in the part of health delivery services to criticals.
This book written by Dr Sharma includes the basic aspects of Biochemistry like Introduction to biochemistry including cell, water and electrolytes, enzymes, food digestion and absorption, carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. Furthermore, Biophysics section includes basics of biophysics and their application in nursing like introduction to biophysics, motion, gravity, force, energy, work, heat, light, pressure, sound and atomic energy. This book also gives importance to medico-electronics and electromagnetics along with application to medical and nursing sciences.
I am sure this book would be useful for nursing students, academicians, nursing scholars and researchers as a ready reference. I wish it would be a great success.

7PREFACE
Biochemistry and Biophysics is a growing enterprise worldwide, driven primarily by the widespread realization of the major contribution that can be made to biological science by a combination of truly state-of-the-art physical measurements with modern molecular biology. The field occupies a unique and central position at the intersection of the biological, chemical, physical, and medical sciences.
Most of the human biological functions and healthcare practices has basis of principles of biochemistry and biophysics. Therefore, nurses involved in providing nursing care must understand the biochemical and biophysical principles and their applications in healthcare practices. So that, nurses can assess, plan, implement and evaluate each care intervention more effectively and scientifically.
This textbook titled “Textbook of Biochemistry and Biophysics for Nurses” is a modest attempt to present the basic principles and practices of biochemistry and biophysics in simple, lucid and illustrative manner by incorporating their applications to healthcare and nursing practices. The content of textbook is divided into two sections; Section-A Biochemistry and Section-B Biophysics. Section-A includes basics of biochemistry, cell, water, electrolytes, enzymes, digestions and absorption of food. Furthermore, biochemical aspects and metabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fat has been presented. Section-B includes basic physical principles and healthcare/nursing applications of biophysics like motions, gravity, force, energy, work, heat, light, pressure, sound, electricity, electromagnetism, atomic energy and electronics. The content of biophysics has been presented using non-mathematical approach by incorporating adequate examples from healthcare and nursing sciences. In addition, it has been ensured that each physical principle is simply defined and discussed with its application to nursing practices. Content of this textbook will fully meet the needs of the nursing students studying in Post Basic BSc Nursing program, since it is designed according to the revised syllabus and guidelines given by Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi. In addition to this book will also serve the purpose of preparation of nurses for various competitive exams and job opportunities.
