9Foreword
The management of urological diseases has undergone drastic changes over the years. With the successful management of BPH and LUTS using drugs, there has been an increasing role of drug treatment in urological practice. Effective drug therapy is now known for the management of erectile dysfunction and overactive bladder. Medical treatment is an integral component of urological practice. This trend is not limited only to benign urological conditions; there has been scientific research for an effective and tolerable drug treatment for urological cancers. This has witnessed the introduction of agents for the treatment of most urological cancers.
Giving the increasing role of drugs use in urological practice, the need for a manual of medical treatment in urology cannot be overemphasized. The manual is timely, and aids the surgical residents, urology residents, practicing urologists and general practitioners in keeping pace with this new and rapidly expanding field of urology.
The authors have gone to a great extent to organize this unique book into easily readable chapters with an outline of the drugs following each chapter. This arrangement guides the reader and serves as a quick office reference on prescription. The editors and authors have done a commendable work. However, they need to revise the book regularly.

11Preface
There are a large number of books published every year on the surgical aspects of urology. As urologists and patients get more interested in minimally and less invasive options for their diseases, we were motivated to prepare a book on the different aspects of medical care for urological diseases. This book will help the general urologist to identify the recent trends in the medical management and act as a guide to the office practice of such conditions.
The existence of many urological diseases that can be treated or palliated medically, call for succinct manual to the medical treatment of such conditions. Most urological infections are primarily treated medically, unless complicated. Some conditions that are usually treated medically include erectile dys-function, pain syndromes and bladder overactivity. In another group of urological diseases, medical treatment may be the initial rational therapy in many situations and many patients tend to be inclined to this. A good example can be found in the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic enlargement. In urological cancers, medical therapy is an integral part of treatment or palliation depending on histological type, grade and stage of malignancy.
This book will guide readers on the choice of medical therapy for various urological conditions, and will provide handy office reference on drug choice, complications and dosing. Drug therapy is a very dynamic area and readers are advised to verify pharmacotherapeutic information from currentevidence-based protocols and manufacturers' guide.
