7Preface to the Second Edition
Overwhelming response and new information in the field of clinical laboratory have promoted me to bring out the second edition of The Short Textbook of Medical Laboratory for Technicians.
Needless to say that techniques are discussed briefly and in a very simple and easy-to-understand language on microbiology, hematology, immunology, histopathology, blood transfusion, clinical pathology and clinical biochemistry. New materials like autoanalyzer, biological safety cabinet, Wood's lamp, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), bone marrow aspiration/bone marrow biopsy, fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), disposal of waste products, etc. are added. All the chapters are thoroughly revised.
Dr DS Jamwal, Ex-Professor and Head, Department of Biochemistry, Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences (ASCOMS), Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India, has contributed to the section of clinical biochemistry and allied topics. His expertise, contribution and suggestions has enhanced utility of the book.
The accomplishment of second edition would have not been possible without active contribution and actual help rendered by my wife Jyotsna Gupte and son Anubhav Gupte.
Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Managing Director), Mr Tarun Duneja (Director-Publishing) and KK Raman (Production Manager) and the expert team of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, deserve special thanks for publishing the book speedly and in very impressive form. Ms Rishu Sharma deserves special thanks for going through proof of this volume carefully and thoroughly.
Hopefully, the book will come up to the expectation to all concerned, especially laboratory technicians. Comments and criticism for the improvement of future editions are solicited.

9Preface to the First Edition
An ideal laboratory technician is expected to be in possession of sound knowledge of procedures and test techniques. It is generally seen that sometimes many books are required for obtaining answers of simple and minor queries.
These problems and many others are taken care of in this volume The Short Textbook of Medical Laboratory for Technicians. The techniques are discussed briefly and in simple and easy-to-understand language on microbiology, hematology, immunology, histopathology, blood transfusion, clinical pathology and clinical biochemistry. These are compiled under headings: name of technique, principle, requirements, procedure, and results-cum-interpretation. The introductory chapters make the book more useful to average laboratory workers.
Dr DS Jamwal, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, Government Medical College, Jammu, Jammu and Kashmir, India, has been kind enough to contribute to the section, “Clinical Biochemistry” and allied topics. His expertise, contribution and constructive criticism are bound to enhance the utility of the book.
I express my sincere thanks to Dr Vijay Sharma, for going through the manuscript and for valuable suggestions.
It is my privilege to express gratitude to my wife, Jyotsna Gupte, and son, master Anubhav Gupte, for extending full cooperation and help in the preparation of the book.
Well-deserving thanks are extended to M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for bringing out the book in a very impressive form.
Hopefully, the book will find wide acceptance by all concerned and laboratory technicians in particular. Comments and criticism for the improvement of future edition are most welcome.
