7Foreword
It gives me immense pleasure to write this Foreword to the book Textbook of Gynecology for Nurses written by Lecturer Anupama Tamrakar, who worked as a Program Coordinator in the Department of Nursing, School of Health and Allied Sciences, Pokhara University, Nepal.
We know that there are only a few books on gynecological nursing. The book has tried to mitigate this deficiency in the field of gynecological nursing and aids both students and teachers to improve and update their knowledge.
Anupama Tamrakar has a long experience of teaching obstetrics and gynecology in various nursing colleges. She is considered to be one of the best teachers in this subject.
This book is designed to cover the gynecological problems and nursing management of those problems. It is divided into several chapters and, at the end of each chapter, a bibliography is given.
I am confident that this book will help the postgraduate nursing students, basic nursing students and post-certificate basic nursing students to better understand and apply the nursing process to provide nursing care to the clients with gynecological problems.
I believe that this book will meet a long-felt need and will be widely used. This book will make a worthy contribution to the quality of nursing care and nursing profession.
I congratulate Anupama Tamrakar for her commendable contribution to nursing.

9Preface
The female body has been made to bear the burden of reproduction and the process is not very simple. Most health issues that women face are gynecological. Gynecological conditions can be described as any disease or disorder that affects a female's sexual part. There are several gynecological problems she may face during her lifetime. Some of these problems are easy to care having fewer consequences and some of them are severe giving rise to serious physical, psychological and social problems.
The importance of good health and education to a woman's well-being and that of her family and society cannot be overstated. Yet, around the world, the right to health, and especially reproductive and sexual health, is far from reality for many women. Reproductive health of women is determined not only by the socioeconomic development levels, lifestyles and women's position in the society but also by the quality and availability of healthcare. A nurse as a part of a health team works in various settings, needs to provide care to the women to help in promoting their health, and in curing and prevention of gynecological problems. Hence, it is the duty of all the nursing professionals to acquire knowledge and skills in this field, which will help to provide quality care to women. This textbook will equip nurses to attend the nursing expertise in all the activities related to gynecological nursing.
Who will Benefit from this Book?
All nursing professionals and nursing students will benefit from this book by acquiring knowledge and transferring it into practice in a fruitful manner. The content of this book scrupulously satisfies the requirement of graduate as well as postgraduate students. This book will also help the nurses working in clinical area to transfer their knowledge into practice in a logical and effective manner. This book will help nurses to provide quality care to the clients suffering from gynecological problems. This ultimately will contribute to the development of our profession.
The aim of this work is to help the nursing students and the nurses for better understanding of the gynecological problems and their care. This book also aims to help the nurse educators as their reference.
Organization of the Book
This book is well organized in 27 chapters, which are specially designed to serve the very purpose of this book. Chapter 1 reviews the anatomy and physiology of female reproductive system. Chapter 2 narrates the examination of gynecological patients. Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the development of genital organs and congenital malformations of female genital organs. Chapters 5 to 7 are concerned with menopause, menstrual problems and bleeding disorders. Chapters 8 and 9 describe displacement and prolapse of genital organs. Chapter 10 deals with genital fistulae. Chapters 11 to 13 provide information regarding pelvic inflammations and 10infections. Chapter 14 recites about infertility.
