7Preface
The idea of the manual was initiated by our beloved colleague Dr Atef A Tahat. He was one of the outstanding ophthalmologists in Jordan. His ultimate dream was to have a manual written on ophthalmic emergencies. While he was fighting his chronic illness, he started writing the manual. Unfortunately, Dr Atef passed away in 2003 and we were determined to make his dream come true. This book is dedicated to the memory of Dr Atef Tahat.
The decision as to whether or not a patient requires an immediate examination is of utmost importance. Ocular emergencies can be classified into:
  1. True emergencies: Therapy should be instituted within minutes.
  2. Urgent situations: Therapy should be instituted within several hours.
  3. Semiurgent situations: Therapy should be instituted within few days.
Each patient seeking ophthalmologic advice believes that he has an important problem that requires immediate attention. Even though his complaints do not fall under the category of urgency, they should not be minimized and dismissed as trivial. Patience and understanding are required in the handling of all patients.
This book is written to the ophthalmology residents and for the eye care providers, who need quick access to additional information in differential diagnosis and treatment.
Our goal in this work is to produce a concise book providing essential quick diagnostic tips and specific therapeutic information related to eye diseases.
This manual is not designed for the shelf but rather for the white coat pocket.

9Acknowledgments
The authors would like to thank the family of Dr Atef A Tahat, especially his brother Rafee, for their support. It is not without their insistence that we could have the manual done.
Special thanks to our resident Dr Mona Tayseer, for her help in editing the final draft of the manual.
