7Preface to the Second Edition
The basic details of the first edition have been retained in this revised and enlarged second edition. Thus, the book has the same 12 chapters, each one for a unit of the Indian Nursing Council (INC) syllabus.
Difficult concepts have been explained in greater details as per the constructive suggestions of the readers. Similarly, more thought-provoking questions have been added at the end of each of the 12 chapters (units) to make them more student friendly. University question papers have been appended at the end of the text for easy reference. The statistical data have been completely updated as per the findings of 2011 Census.
I sincerely hope that this vastly improved second edition of the popular textbook will receive the usual warm reception at the hands of the student community and teaching fraternity.
My heartfelt thanks are due to Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman), Mr Ankit Vij (Managing Director) and Mr Tarun Duneja (Director-Publishing) of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for their constant support.
Valuable suggestions from the readers are most welcome and will be included in the future editions for further improvement of the text.

9Preface to the First Edition
Sociology is the youngest of all social sciences. As a teaching subject, it is becoming more popular. The Nursing Council has now included sociology in the second year of the Basic BSc (Nursing) course with a brand new syllabus. This textbook has been prepared strictly as per the latest syllabus divided into 12 chapters.
The encouraging reception which the students and teachers have accorded to my previous books, has further inspired me to produce and present this book. I do hope that this book also will be able to win their favor and get a warm reception.
In writing this book, I have referred to and drawn much material from the works of a number of writers to whom I am extremely grateful. In order to be objective in the explanation of sociological concepts, I have profusely quoted sentences and statements of various sociologists to whom I am greatly indebted. Hence, as an author, I do not wish to claim any originality to many of the ideas and descriptions contained in this book. But, in all humility, I can say that I have presented the matter in my own way.
I must thank Shri Jitendar P Vij (Chairman and Managing Director), Mr Tarun Duneja (Director-Publishing) and the staff of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for their constant support and encouragement to publish this book.
Readers are most welcome to offer their valuable suggestions, which will be of great help in improving the book in its next edition.
