7FOREWORD
I consider it as a great honor and privilege to write foreword for Handbook on Adolescent and Adult Immunization ably edited by a stalwart of pediatrics and expert in immunization in India, Dr A Parthasarathy, who has been my friend, philosopher and guide. He has used his academic talent of being an expert in immunization and adolescent medicine to bring out this user-friendly handbook.
Immunization is a proven tool for controlling and eliminating life-threatening infectious diseases and is estimated to avert between 2 and 3 million deaths each year. It is one of the most cost-effective health investments, with proven strategies that make it accessible to even the most hard-to-reach and vulnerable populations. It has clearly defined target groups; it can be delivered effectively through outreach activities; and vaccination does not require any major lifestyle change.
By definition, a handbook is a concise manual or reference book providing specific information or instruction about a subject, yet small enough to be held in the hand. It could be a ready-reference book, concise treatise or compendiums of information on a special subject. They are often designed as a pocket reference book that can be easily consulted and provide quick answers in a certain area. The various chapters cover a wide range of issues including the principles, details about vaccines, their schedules for different age groups and finally a “Ready Reckoner” Table for adolescent and adult vaccines registered in India. I earnestly wish I had this book during my postgraduate days.

9PREFACE
With the high immunization coverage of childhood vaccines in the National Immunization Schedule, we have virtually controlled and eliminated vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) such as diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and measles and eradicated dreaded crippling poliomyelitis in India. So much so adolescents and adults who missed their childhood shots of vaccines meant to prevent these VPDs are at greater risk of complications in case they contract these infections due to “shift to the right” phenomenon of infectious diseases and also will meet with fatal outcome including death.
Therefore, there is a greater need now than ever before to offer catch up and adolescent specific vaccines for the adolescent and adult age group by providing these childhood vaccines to them. Hence, the National Immunization Schedule should henceforth concentrate on the newly registered adolescent and possibly adult vaccines also in future.
The practicing pediatricians and family physicians need to concentrate to provide these vaccines to their adolescent and adult clients. With the objective of providing the needed information in concise manner, the contents of this book have been designed to help practitioners in their office practice. It is our fervent hope that with your suggestions, we will be able to produce more detailed contents in future editions of the book. Let us wish the readers informative and practical guidelines-oriented reading. Your suggestions are most welcome to improve the quality and contents of the book.
A Parthasarathy
