7PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
One major objective of a new edition is to update information. The second edition of this book follows the form and principles, established in the earlier edition. But the format of the book including the title is changed as chapters of Dental Anatomy are included in this new edition. Dental Anatomy and Histology are taught as a combined subject to undergraduate dental students. So the title ‘Essentials of Oral Histology’ is changed to Essentials of Dental Anatomy and Oral Histology and it is written in simplified manner for easy assimilation of the students. Along with the previous chapters of oral histology, detailed morphology of both deciduous and permanent sets of dentition, development of occlusion, basic method of tooth carving, vasculature and innervations of orofacial regions and maxillary sinus are the new inclusions of this text. This book contains considerable number of colored photographs, original photomicrographs, illustrations, tables and diagrams, believing strongly that anatomical and histological textbooks must present informations in a visual format.
I assume, all the responsibilities for errors and omissions in this book. I sincerely welcome comments, criticisms and constructive suggestions from readers to improve the value of book.
Kabita Chatterjee
9PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION
The oral cavity or stomatodeum is considered as the mirror of the body. Many systemic diseases have their oral manifestations. So a good clinician should have a firm knowledge of oral histology which is the fundamental science for understanding the intricate morphologies of oral and paraoral tissues.
There are several excellent textbooks available on oral histology. Essentials of Oral Histology has been written with a view to present the subject to the undergraduate dental students in a more simplified manner for their easy assimilation. It is a humble attempt to fill the niche for the students of dentistry with the current information about the development, structure and function of teeth and associated tissues.
I assume, all the responsibilities for errors and omissions in this book. I sincerely welcome the constructive suggestions from the students and the teachers for further improvement of this maiden effort.
Kabita Chatterjee
