First Edition: 2014

As with previous volumes of Recent Advances in Surgery, this issue is designed to provide both an up-to-date and comprehensive review of important topical issues as well as providing a source of information for surgeons undergoing examinations in General Surgery.
The present issue covers a number of specialist areas which should be of value to all surgeons wishing to keep abreast of changes within the broad spectrum of surgical activity.
A number of general issues are covered including safer surgery, local anaesthetics in surgical practice and perioperative fluid management. We cover topics in gastrointestinal surgery such as laparostomy, pseudomyxoma peritonei, intestinal failure and local recurrence of rectal cancer. Hepatopancreaticobiliary surgical topics include severity of acute pancreatitis, enhanced recovery programmes, and the management of hepatocellular carcinoma.
Breast surgical topics include breast conservation after neoadjuvant chemotherapy and personalised cancer surgery. The management of maxillofacial trauma is becoming increasingly important and this subject is also included. The outcome following lower limb arterial angioplasty is an important topical issue. Finally, we have a review of randomised clinical trials and meta-analyses in surgery.
We hope that this volume maintains the high standards of past editions. We are most grateful to all our contributors for taking the time to provide a comprehensive review of each of the subject.
