9Foreword
When Dr Amar Agarwal invited me to write the foreword for Management of PHACO Complications: Newer Techniques, my first thought was “Is there anything more one can say about this prolific ophthalmologist that has not already been said?” On reflection, however, I do not know of anyone that is more productive in our field and what's more, who has opinions that are all based on their own work and experience. Having said that, he is the first to acknowledge even the smallest contribution that any colleague has made to improve any of his surgical skills. With that in mind, what could have been a daunting task instead becomes pretty straight forward and my absolute pleasure and honor.
Dr Agarwal has a curriculum vitae as long as I have seen and is widely published, has authored or edited 56 previous ophthalmic texts and has presented hundreds of lectures all over the globe. His videos are incredibly well filmed, edited to show everything during the surgical procedure, whether good, great or not so good and hence land up becoming teaching tools of significant value. He has contributed with new surgical instruments, surgical devices and novel techniques, and he and his hospital group have discovered or developed at least 30 new inventions that have led to ophthalmic surgeons worldwide being better equipped to deal with cataract surgery and beyond. As though, this is not enough, he serves on numerous committees and boards and in many, in a chairing role. At the time this book is being published, Dr Agarwal is the current International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) President. All of the aforementioned are incredibly impressive but is still not, for me at least, the most impressive aspect of Dr Agarwal's work. The reader may notice that Dr Agarwal, even though, he may consult for industry, does not push any one product or company but is rather behoved to nothing but the absolute truth. Whenever he tells you something, teaches you a new technique, writes a new article or book, it is only the facts that become apparent. There are no other motives. An extremely affable man, Dr Agarwal's sense of humor, genuine love for his profession, patients and colleagues allows him to enjoy the admiration and respect of the international ophthalmic community. Anterior segment 10surgery would not be the same today were, it not for his contributions; such is the extent of his impact on our field. It is to our benefit that he has chosen to share his vast repertoire of skills by means of writing, presenting lectures and showing surgical videos, and many thousands of ophthalmic surgeons worldwide are grateful for this.
Dr Agarwal has not only edited the book, but also together with Dr Priya Narang, has basically written the book. There are only a few chapters not written by one or both of these two editors in the entire book. Dr Narang is an accomplished surgeon, author, researcher and contributor to ophthalmology in her own right, and together with Dr Agarwal, they have produced a comprehensive work that will certainly provide the cataract surgeon with more options when complications are encountered. There are some contributions from invited international experts in their respective fields of cataract surgery that simply rounds off a superb work on the vast topic of phaco surgery and new techniques of managing complications. As with almost all of his preceding works, this one is destined to become another best seller for this remarkable colleague. I know that if you gain only 10 percent of the intended transfer of knowledge contained in Dr Agarwal's latest book, you will become a more competent cataract surgeon.
