FM13PREFACE
Complimentary editorial comments on our last volume (RAP—21: Hot Topics) by the Asian Health have not just delighted the RAP fraternity but also lent further support to our resolve to present the best to our readers on topical pediatric issues with special accent on resource-limited regions.
The present volume (RAP—22: Hot Topics) presents 31 peer-reviewed state-of-the-art chapters contributed by as many as 48 experts drawn from India and abroad. The evidence-based chapters attempt to present the depth and breadth of knowledge in the field of contemporary pediatrics with special reference to its applicability in the Indian subcontinent and rest of the South-East Asian Region (SEAR).
A multitude of topical issues ranging from dengue fever, malaria, tuberculosis, influenza, primary immunodeficiency, cerebral palsy, ketogenic diet, celiac disease, hepatitis B, hepatocyte transplantation and nonalcoholic fatty liver and steatohepatitis through obesity, severe acute malnutrition (SAM), acute kidney injury and nephritic syndrome to rheumatic fever, congenital heart disease, sickle-cell disease, and thalassemia syndromes are dealt with.
Also incorporated are chapters on India's national child health programs, new neonatal resuscitative guidelines, dermatologic emergencies, status epilepticus and intracranial hypertension, sleep disorders and eating disorders. Chapters on adverse drug reactions, probiotics and newer antibiotics for vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and other pathogens should be of special interest in the wake of evolving campaign for pharmacovigilance and rational drug therapy as also facing the problem of increasing antimicrobial resistance head-on.
In conformity with the policy of the RAP series ever since its inception and first appearance in 1991, each and every chapter is outstanding by its excellence, providing a stimulating, mature, informed, state-of-the-art and, at times, even provocative update. Such an approach is known to be befitting when the goal is not only to inform but also to motivate discussion, interaction, research and innovation. Multidisciplinary approach with an eye on future, a well-tested and well-appreciated conviction with the RAP series, continues to occupy pride of place in the present volume too.
All said and done, a galaxy of chapters focusing on the contemporary concepts, concerns, and controversies with emphasis on new and evolving concepts in child health as relevant in India and other South-East Asian countries forms the lifeline of the volume.
Here's wishing you all, dear readers, an enjoyable, fruitful and productive reading.
