Yet another book on “Glaucoma Surgery”, you may say, and indeed it is. Where science moves in leaps and bounds, it is imperative to strive to be up-to-date. What this book promises is to tackle specific issues that the comprehensive ophthalmologist, the ophthalmology trainee, and the dedicated glaucoma surgeon would surely find interesting. This book attempts to offer a snapshot of current frontiers and controversies in 2014.
In what seems to be a defining moment for glaucoma surgery, we all at once have to dabble with many new surgical procedures, most of which seem to reach the market without any true evidence on their basic utility or safety. On that front, the book tries to take a balanced stand, offering classification for the new surgeries in a way that would allow the practitioner's ability to navigate through those murky waters, and provides an overview of available literature to help the surgeon distinguish between science and science fiction.
New surgeries should not be ignored; they should certainly be explored and embraced when they provide clear evidence. Meanwhile, we still have to refine our old and tested ways of glaucoma surgery, be it tubes, trabeculectomies or nonpenetrating surgeries. It is always paramount to deliberate on the basics, how to select a patient for surgery; how to prepare a patient; and which surgery to offer. In all those issues, and many more, the book offers new insight.
We are confident that this book will provide a rich and fulfilling read to all who are interested in glaucoma surgery. It promises to be the first among a series of books that the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery (ISGS), intends to release regularly.
So simply, Enjoy!
