Abstract

This chapter is on airway management in ICU. Airways are devices to ensure open pathway between the mouth and nose and the patient’s lungs. Airway management is primary consideration in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, emergency medicine, anesthesia and intensive care medicine. Intensive care unit (ICU) physician should be capable of performing a variety of airway management techniques. Noninvasive and invasive are two types of techniques in airway management. Oropharyngeal airways, nasopharyngeal airway and laryngeal mask airway are types of noninvasive airway management. Esophageal-tracheal combitube, endotracheal intubation, cricothyroidotomy and tracheostomy are the types of invasive airway management. A well-illustrate flowchart on difficult airway management is also given in this chapter.
