Abstract

Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Body mass index (BMI) is a simple index of weight for-height that is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters. Obesity poses definite challenge in terms of airway control, ventilation and more rapid desaturation, giving lesser margin of safety. In obese patients there is a change in body composition, activity of P450 enzymes, volume of blood, besides risk of miscalculation of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by conventional method. Morbid obesity is a major independent risk factor for deep venous thrombosis and sudden death from acute postoperative pulmonary embolism (PE). Table on systemwise overview of physiological alterations and associated complications/comorbidities of obesity is also given in this chapter.
