9Preface
The study of Diagnostic Aids in Temporomandibular Joint Disorders has been a topic of interest in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery field for many years. The topic has proved to be quite complex and complicated. Tremendous interest in this area accompanied by lack of complete knowledge has stimulated numerous concepts, theories and diagnostic methods. This, of course, has led to much confusion in an already complicated field of study. Although the level of knowledge today is greater than ever before, there is still much to learn. Some of today's techniques will prove to be the most effective treatments in future.
It is my hope that this text will assist postgraduate students, teachers and practitioners in making important treatment decisions for their patients.
I began my teaching career at the Institute of Dental Sciences, University of Jammu in 2009 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. At that time, I believed there was a need for a teaching manual that could present the topics of TMJ diagnostic disorders in an organized, logical and scientific manner. During that period, M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers approached me with the concept of compiling a book which will help undergraduates and postgraduates. Later on, I joined Govternment Dental College, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, University of Kashmir, in 2010, and got an approval for the same book which I authored and compiled from various textbooks and renowned journals on the topic.
I believe the strength of a book lies not in author's words, but in scientific references that are offered to support the ideas presented. Unreferenced ideas should be considered only as opinions that further require scientific investigation to either verify or negate them. It is extremely difficult to keep a textbook updated, especially in the field in which so much is happening so quickly.
In four years of experience, I referred almost 250 articles to support this book. This reflects the significant scientific growth of this field. It should be acknowledged that as future truths are uncovered, the professional has the obligation to appropriately respond with changes that best reflect the new information.
The purpose of this text is to present a logical and practical approach to the Diagnostic Aids in TMJ Disorders. The book contains 15 chapters and at last authentic bibliography is given. The intent of this text is to develop an understanding and rational approach to the diagnostic aids in TMJ disorders.
Shahid Hassan

11Acknowledgments
A text such as this is never accomplished by the work of one person, but rather represents the accumulation of many who have gone before. The efforts of these individuals have led to the present state of knowledge in the field. To acknowledge each of these would be an impossible task.
The multiple listing of bibliography at the end begins to recognize the true work behind this text. There are, however, a few individuals whom I feel both obligated and pleased to acknowledge. First and foremost are Dr Sripathi Rao and Dr Joyce Sequeria, who have been my mentors to this day. They are the epitomes of an outstanding thinker, information simulator and teacher.
It gives me immense pleasure to express my sincere gratitude to my reverend teacher Dr Ajaz A Shah, Professor and Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar. I shall forever be indebted to him for his critical evaluation towards perfection which has sculptured me and made me do things in the right direction. His untiring pursuit and simplicity to approach have been a constant source of encouragement as well as inspiration throughout compiling of the book.
It is with a humble sense of gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to Dr Irshad Ahmed, Assistant Professor, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Government Dental College and Hospital, Srinagar, for his constant support and encouragement during the conceptualization of this book.
I also wish to acknowledge residents, over the years, at the college premises for keeping me alert, focused and searching for the truth.
Last but, by no means, least, I wish to express my gratitude to my family for their constant love, support, encouragement and sacrifice during my writings. My mother and father inspired and encouraged me from the very beginning. My wife has understood the time commitment and has given up many evenings to my computer.
I have been blessed with a wonderful and loving family since the last 30 years and their sacrifice has resulted in this book.
Above all, I bow my head and humbly thank Almighty Allah for all His bountiful grace and blessings showered on me.
