5By always praising the all pervading being, who is without beginning and without end, who is the supreme Lord of all the worlds, and who is the eternal controller of the universe, one gets beyond all grief.
Om. From the unreal, lead me to the real. From darkness, lead me to light. From death, lead me to immortality.
Om. O God, may we hear with our ears what is auspicious. O Ye adorable ones, may we see with our eyes what is auspicious. May we sing praises to Ye and enjoy with strong limbs and body, the life allotted to us by the God. “Om Peace, Peace, Peace”.
Om. May almighty God protect us both, the preceptor and the disciple. May he nourish us both. May we work together with great energy. May our study be vigorous and fruitful. May we not hate each other “Om Peace, Peace, Peace”.
We offer our salutations to thee, the giver of happiness and well-being. We offer our salutations to thee, the promoter of good and auspiciousness. We offer our salutations to thee, the bestower of bliss and still greater bliss.
O Lord, thou art the embodiment of infinite energy; do thou fill me with energy. Thou art the embodiment of infinite virility; do thou endow me with virility. Thou art the embodiment of infinite strength; do thou bestow strength upon me. Thou art the embodiment of infinite power; do thou grant power unto me. Thou art the embodiment of infinite courage; do thou inspire me with courage. Thou art the embodiment of infinite fortitude; do thou steel me with fortitude.

May I be able to look upon all beings with the eye of a friend. May we look upon one another with the eye of a friend.6
7PREFACE
As long as I live I learn
Bhagwan Shri Ramakrishna Dev
“Essentials of Ear, Nose and Throat” is intended to serve medical students in the diagnosis and management of diseases of ear, nose, throat, head and neck region. This ‘all in one’ up-to-date textbook present the essential material in a clear, direct manner, anticipating questions that occur during examination and providing specific information to allow an individualized approach to diagnosis and treatment. The students will find boxes, tables, flow charts, line diagrams and photos that enhance learning. The book is comprehensive and of broader scope and would be useful for even residents and practitioners. The brevity, conciseness, readable format and easy accessibility of key information will facilitate students’ learning and memorizing. The socratic approach of posing questions is followed throughout the book. Each chapter begins with the Specific Learning Objectives that consists of the questions which students are supposed to answer after going through the chapter. The chapters end with the Self-Evaluation Exercises that offers MCQs, filling the blanks, matching and true and false sentences. Each chapter has highlighted key points for the quick revision of the students. At the end of some of the chapters are given the additional Pearls and Nuggets and Problem-oriented Cases, which will be of immense use and interest to the students.
I would like to acknowledge my parents, the late Ramchandra Bansal and Kalawati Devi Bansal as I owe a lot to them. I appreciate the patience and understanding of my wife Sushma and kids Mohit, Tejal, Astha and Agastyaa, which are essential for the completion of such project. I wish to thank all the faculties who spared their valuable time in reviewing the chapters. The process of learning is truly life-long. Creating this textbook allowed me to continue to become invigorated and inspired by ENT. I hope that students will find my efforts useful and will inform me regarding further improvements that I can make in the next edition.
Mohan Bansal

Following senior faculties mostly Professors ENT were contacted for emailing the chapters. Majority of them sent their valuable inputs. Their insightful suggestions for improvement helped me maintain book's accuracy and clarity. I am extremely grateful to them. The chapters were modified significantly after getting the feedbacks from them, other colleagues and students. To make the textbook ‘All-in-one’ and students’ friendly, sections of Specific Learning Objectives, Self-evaluation Exercises, Problem-oriented Cases and additional Pearls and Nuggets were introduced in the chapters.
