7Preface
Psychiatry is a very important branch of medicine. It is not only important for a nurse in training because it is a subject in nursing curriculum, but also because nursing students can apply these principles in any branch of medicine while dealing with patients. Psychiatric nursing is now evolving as a specialty in nursing. This book is written keeping the student nurse, a practicing nurse and a specialist nurse in mind. It is helpful for a student to pass her examination, the qualified nurse to practice her art better, and for a psychiatric nurse as a ready-reference book.
A Textbook of Therapeutic Modalities in Psychiatric Nursing is prepared according to the syllabus of Indian Nursing Council to enable the graduate and postgraduate students to use the therapies for various psychiatric disorders.
This book includes a unit on different therapies in psychiatric nursing for treating various psychiatric disorders. It covers introduction, definition, setting, types, purposes, advantages and disadvantages, and role of psychiatric nurse in various therapies and unit V also includes alternative therapies in psychiatry.
I have always loved teaching. I am glad to have been able to put down what I have always thought the nursing students ought to know about psychiatric therapies. My objectives will be fulfilled if this book helps the nurses to perform well in the clinical practices and examinations and caring for their patients.
