7Preface to the Third Edition
It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction to introduce third edition of my title Medical Surgical Nursing. In offering this text, I remain grateful for the support given to my earlier editions of all my 23 titles on Nursing. Now Medical Surgical Nursing continues to strongly influence by the advancement of science, medicine, surgery and technologies and also changes in social, cultural, and economic environment. So nurses must be updated in their knowledge and skill in decision making, as well as consulting and collaborating with other health care team members. In view of these changes, the text has been fully updated with all the material and added existing new information. An effort has been made to provide the text written at an understandable level with features that help students to understand, apply and practice the challenging content required to function as full-fledged nurse. Along with the challenges nurses of today confront with, there are many opportunities to provide skilled, compassionate nursing care in a variety of health care setting, for the patients in the various stages of illness and for patients across the age continuum.
This third edition of the Medical Surgical Nursing addresses the concepts and skills needed for adult patient care. With this edition, every chapter has been extensively revised. The context has been updated to reflect the latest available information and the increasing emphasis on wellness and home and community-based care. Many changes are in response to suggestions and comments from faculty and students using the text.
The goal of this book is to provide balanced attention to the art and science of medical surgical nursing. The book focuses on all concepts related to nursing care. So this edition will help nurses be confident in their role, skill, knowledge so that they can be truly with the patients they care for. The present text has been arranged in 22 chapters. In the beginning the chapter briefs about the history of medicine and nursing in India, next explains the concept of nursing process and its application. Chapter 4 introduces human genetics and genomic nursing, and subsequent chapters tell about the immunological problems, responsibilities of nurses in perioperative nursing, critical care and oncological nursing. The remaining chapters have been organized into system-wise disorders, for example, respiratory nursing, gastrointestinal nursing, cardiovascular nursing, neurological nursing, orthopedic nursing, urological nursing, reproductive health nursing, etc.
The features of each chapter include the following:
I hope this text will help nurses and nursing students be confident in their role, skills and knowledge so that they can be truly with the patients they care for. It should be kept in mind that no book can provide all the knowledge, so nurses need to know when working with their patients to make decisions about their care pathway and utilize interventions appropriately. I believe that this book will provide a comprehensive framework to assist in the decision-making process and stimulate nurses’ passion for lifelong learning.
I am aware of manifold reasons for errors that might have crept in inadvertently. I shall feel obliged, if such errors are brought to my notice. I sincerely welcome your comments and suggestion and good one will be incorporated in the next edition.

9Preface to the First Edition
It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction to introduce Medical Surgical Nursing to nursing community. In offering this text, I remain grateful for the support given to my earlier titles, i.e. Community Health Nursing, Nursing Research, Nursing Administration and Fundamentals of Nursing.
I have carefully preserved the aspects of the book that have met with such universal acceptance—its state-of-the-art, scientific– based information, its string, logical and user-friendly organization and easy-to-read style.
Medical Surgical Nursing was developed to provide nursing students with the knowledge and skill they need to become competent, think critically and possess the sensitivity to become caring nurses. Professional nursing practice continues to evolve and adapt to society's changing health priorities. The rapidly changing health care delivery system offers new opportunities for nurses to alter the practice of Medical Surgical Nursing and to improve the way nursing care is given.
In this changing world on health care delivery system, nurses will need a broad knowledge to provide the expert care needed in nursing profession. New efforts to reform health care and guarantee with high quality and cost-effective care are radically transforming the culture of care-giving. I believe that the changes in health care present exciting challenges to nurses and it is felt that there is a need for good nursing texts to assist nurses to meet these challenges globally.
In view of the above changes, the text of Medical Surgical Nursing is organized into 19 chapters. Ideally the text is flowed sequentially, but every effort has been made to respect the differing needs of diverse curricula and students. Thus, each chapter stands on its own merit and may be read independently of others. This work is designed to meet the nursing students’ requirement as per their respective universities, boards and nursing councils.
I am aware of manifold reasons for errors that might have crept in inadvertently. I shall feel obliged, if such errors are brought to my notice. I sincerely welcome constructive criticism from both the teachers and the students that would help me to enrich myself and good suggestions will be incorporated in the next revised edition.
