FM7Foreword
It gives me immense pleasure in writing the foreword to this book Clinical Pearls in Cardiology written by Dr Hemanth IK. The book is meant mainly for the medical students and clinicians, who usually find it hard to get time to go through numerous reference books in searching for various clinical signs that could be present or to be looked for in a cardiac patient. This book elaborates the most common as well as some rare clinical signs in cardiology with simple illustrations, graphs and tables so that the reader may find it easy to understand. The book is presented in an interesting questions and answers format, and the questions are framed in such a way that the explanations provided are apt and evidence-based. The book covers the most common cardiac disorders, including congenital heart disease, embryology and necessary explanations of various clinical signs in cardiology. It aims at improving the clinical examination skills of the medical students.
The book details the common symptoms of the cardio-vascular disorders, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, dizziness and leg swelling and provides the pathophysiological explanations to the signs and symptoms of heart diseases with the differential diagnoses. A thorough reading of the book would make the student more competent in the clinical examination of the cardiovascular system and elicitation of the relevant clinical signs. Even though the book is meant mainly for the undergraduate medical students, I would not hesitate to add that it is also an invaluable quick reference guide for the postgraduates, subspecialty candidates and the FM8teachers involved in imparting clinical knowledge to their students as it contains the essentials of clinical cardiology that are covered in multiple textbooks of clinical medicine. This is an excellent book for cardiology and I am very delighted that the authors’ hard work, commitment and dedication have resulted in a medical treasure that would assist the clinicians in sharpening their skills in the clinical examination of the cardiovascular system. Medicine is an ever-changing field and the recent rapid advancements in technology in the field of cardiology have changed the way the cardiac patients are treated today, but the science of clinical medicine has rarely changed and will remain as the essence of medicine forever. In this context, I congratulate Dr Hemanth IK for his splendid work and look forward to many more medical pearls from him.

FM9Preface
The importance of clinical medicine appears to be on the downfall with most of the modern textbooks giving more importance to the investigative part of medicine. It is important that we should concentrate on the clinical side of medicine. This book has been written keeping this aspect in mind. To make things more interesting, the facts are presented in questions and answers format. I sincerely hope that my humble attempt will be beneficial to the readers.
I am extremely thankful to Dr Shafeeq Mattummal, who has helped me in editing this book and his suggestions were very valuable. I am also thankful to Dr Thirunavukkarasu Ganesan, who has taken all the pains to go through the matter, and his suggestions were of immense help in writing this book.
I would also like to thank Shri Jitendar P Vij (Group Chairman) and Mr Ankit Vij (Group President) of M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, for helping me to bring out this book.
I am thankful to all my teachers, colleagues and well wishers, for their support given to me.
