Preface
67Cervical cancer is both preventable and curable provided it is detected in its pre-invasive stage or in the early stage. India accounts for nearly 16% of the global burden and about 1,30,000 new cases are diagnosed per year and more than 75,000 women die of it annually.
The main aim of this book entitled Practical Approach to Cervical Cancer Screening Techniques is to sensitize the postgraduate trainees and practicing gynecologists in the prevention of cervical carcinoma.
My initial interest in colposcopy was stimulated by Late professor Dr Sheila Rajarathinam at Government RSRM Lying-in Hospital, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She sent me to Nowroji Wadia Maternity Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, for my training in colposcopy in 1984. Subsequently, I was trained by Dr Magid Zaklama, Consultant, Birch Hill Hospital, UK for 3 years. Under his mentorship, my technique and interpreting skills and abilities improved, which made me an accredited Colposcopist with the British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology. I am grateful to him, for his efforts and interest shown on me to make an experienced Colposcopist.
With my years of clinical experience, I have written this book with an aim to teach the clinicians, the various techniques used in cervical cancer screening in a very simple way so that they can be incorporated in to their day-to-day clinical practice.
I hope this book will be of great value to the readers and will kindle their interest to venture into techniques to prevent cervical carcinoma.
