13Foreword
Development of modern technology among various areas of the natural science had provided significant changes in the field of spinal surgery. Advent, qualitative progress and dissemination of magnetic resonance image brought major changes in strategy of diagnosis for spinal disorders. New optical technology advanced endoscopic surgery in both of the anterior and posterior spine surgeries. Innovative metallic and non-metallic materials provided some sort of changes for surgical treatment of spinal disorders from the craniocervical junction to the sacroiliac joint. Surgeons, engineers and industry interactively contributed their expertise to the advancement.
Modern Techniques in Spine Surgery was conceived as a convenient textbook covering the broad area of spinal disorders and whole spinal levels. Arvind Bhave as editor, however, selected authors focusing scientists who have originality in basic spinal science or diagnostic method and who have innovative procedures in spine surgeries. Therefore, the book accomplished presenting full of innovative matters in spinal science. Especially, it is impressive that chapters concerning surgical techniques contain anatomical explanation written from standpoint of practitioners of innovative surgical procedures. Some of the novel procedures will be a standardized and spread universally in the near future.
Readers will find this book to be derived from a broad base of background of basic sciences and more applied disciplines (e.g., mechanical/chemical engineering, orthopedics, neurosurgery, etc). Bhave and chapter authors should be congratulated for their contribution producing wonderfully organized textbook for spine surgeons.

15Foreword
Medical science and especially the field of Spine Surgery has progressed tremendously in the last one decade, making it difficult for any individual surgeon to stay current with all the advances. Improvements in techniques, newer instruments, new technologies and improved devices are evolving continuously from different parts of the world and it is important that one remains aware of these developments so that the best is available to one's patient. This textbook, very aptly termed as Modern Techniques in Spine Surgery has 38 Chapters covering the entire spectrum of spine surgery. I am really pleased to see experts from all over the world as authors of these very well written and illustrated chapters. I am confident that this will be a useful addition to every spine surgeon's collection.

The book Modern Techniques in Spine Surgery is a unique collection of articles of new and old techniques in spine. The chapters are contributed by the world leaders and experienced spine surgeons who have given practical advice and tips to overcome common pitfalls. The standard techniques for common spine problems are discussed and what is new is added.
I feel this book can be used as a study guide and reference book for the spine community.
