Dr Kausalya who provided ample time and moral support to Jaya Shankar Kaushik to write the book; and also, to our students and our patients who remain our best teachers.
Pediatric neurology has evolved tremendously over the last decade. A substantial proportion of outpatient and inpatient admissions to pediatric services have neurological etiology. Right from the undergraduation days, nervous system often freaks out the students to “ neurophobia”. When it comes to dealing with delicate children, it is even more complicated. There is a great need for pediatricians and residents to understand the basic approach to diagnosis of childhood neurological problems. Children with neurological problems do not present with a diagnosis; they present with symptoms and signs. We felt that existing textbooks do not help approach a clinical case and logically conclude with the differential diagnoses. Apart from understanding the clinical approach, students need guidance on presenting a neurological case and understanding the necessary investigations and outline preliminary management. This book is an attempt to gather the most practice relevant aspects of pediatric neurology in a comprehensive and simplified manner.
The book has four sections. The first section covers clinical neuroanatomy, neuroimaging, electrophysiology, and other essential investigations in pediatric neurology. The second section focuses on how to approach a child with a specific neurological problem. Chapters on clinical approach highlight the points to be covered in history and examination. The text is replete with clinical pearls of wisdom to reach a clinical diagnosis and plan relevant investigations. The third section is the core of the book called “Residents’ Corner,” to help the residents to present a neurological case, thus imploring them to think in a logical sequence. Practical key boxes provide the templates that can help the residents on how to present important aspects of relevant neurological history or examination in a particular case. The book ends with quick notes on management issues of common neurological ailments encountered in day-to-day practice, relevant to both residents and practitioners. We have used figures, flowcharts, tables, anecdotes, and mnemonics liberally making it reader-friendly and enhancing retention.
Considering rapid progress in the field of pediatric neurology, controversies and difference of opinion are bound to exist in the clinical approach to various conditions. This is the first edition, and we will be happy to rectify any unintentional and unknown errors in the book.
