5PREFACE
Helminthiasis, especially filariasis and schistosomiasis are constantly posing health problems, especially in resource-limited populations. In spite of research work all over the world, helminthic infection control, treatment and preventon measures are not up to the mark.
Needless to add that complexity of problem has gained momentum because of unchecked population multiplication, poor socioeconomic conditions and poor sanitation, especially in developing countries. To add fuel to this crisis, we have so far failed to develop vaccines against helminths. Thus, helminths are having a field day to cause morbidity. However, a lot of work is in progress in this direction. Hopefully, in foreseeable future, we may get effective vaccine(s) against helminths.
Though helmiths are more prevalent in tropical countries, they have become a factor of concern all over the world in one way or the other. Sufferers include inhabitants of developed and developing countries, poor and rich alike. These worms have vital role to play in causing malnutrition, growth retardation, malignancy and what not.
The present book, The Short Textbook of Medical Helminthology aims at a comprehensive, reasonably illustrated and state-of-the-art update of helminths, a universal cause of morbidity and mortality.
Apart from routine worm description, the book provides discussion on such interesting topics as Emergence of Helminthic Infections, Helminthic Nosocomial Infection, Oncogenic Helminths, Control, Prevention and Vaccines, Treatment, etc. Hot topics like Schistosomiasis, Filariasis and Hydatidosis are discussed with up-to-date information. The book is adequately illustrated as well.
Hopefully this book with meaningful illustrations and up-to-date information shall be welcomed by the academicians and all those interested in helminths and allied issues.
I look forward to suggestions and constructive critical comments for bringing out improved future editions.
Satish Gupte
