4Foreword
Literature on nursing procedures especially for sick children is rare and inadequate for use in Indian health institutions. Nurses acquire competency by practicing on instructions from senior nurses/nursing teachers. Whereas written document on steps of performing nursing task would be safe and valid. Written document would help setting standard of pediatric nursing practice, and shall be helpful for nursing teachers to demonstrate the correct process of care of children.
I am so very satisfied with the attempt of the author of this book to provide practical resource material for students, teachers and practical nurses. I am sure this ready material would set nurses critically analyze each set of procedure as per their institute policy and facilities, convey it to the author for incorporating it in the next issue and thus keep the process of evolving the best literature suitable for large section of nurses engaged in taking care of children.
My best wishes for utilizing the book for health and welfare of our children.

5Preface
Nursing students and staff need to have competency in performing Pediatric Nursing Procedures while delivering child health services. Indian nursing council have recommended set pediatric nursing procedures to be competently demonstrated to the students and get return demonstration for certifying them as qualified to register as nurses with the nursing council. Health institutions expect nurses to perform pediatric care as per set norms in the form of procedures. Whereas nursing literature is short of steps of procedures to be performed for looking after sick children in Indian health institutions. Hence, this book on pediatric nursing procedures is a step toward filling gap in the required literatures.
The book is learner-friendly, divided in two sections. The first section is on basic nursing procedures and second section is on advanced nursing procedures. Each procedure is covered under subheadings, e.g. introduction, definition, purpose, methods, articles required and steps of procedures. Explanation whereever required and special points to remember while performing procedure are added for the benefit of the readers. Some useful text is arranged in the appendices at the end of the book.
It gives me immense pleasure while preparing the second edition of the book, I am grateful to the reviewers for giving suggestions and thus providing me guidelines for adding advanced nursing procedures of neonatal care and intensive care of babies. I also thank the readers for accepting and appreciating the contents of the procedures. However the real nursing care is incorporating the theory into practice.
This book shall be useful for all beginners in pediatric nursing whether a general nurse midwife, BSc nurse, or postgraduate nurses. A set of this book in each pediatric ward shall be of immense help.
Raman Kalia
