67Preface
Learning is an adaptive change in behavior caused by experience.
—Shepherd (1994), Neurobiologist
Writing a textbook for the undergraduate medical students necessitates the author to go back to his formative days listening to their teachers, analyzing the taught materials to understand and grasp the essential facts and thereafter prepare for the examinations. I had several problems in those days, especially concerning orthopedics, which kept on haunting my mind while preparing the manuscript of the book.
Orthopedics, as a whole, formed a sideline subject for the undergraduate medical students, however, gradually it is coming, more or less, to the forefront with the importance of managing the increasing numbers of accidents and trauma patients, and reconstructive surgery. It is no more just a better alternative to the bonesetter's job. Today, the standard of demands of the patients is increasing, simultaneously, with the advances in the medical care fields. Today, the patients and their attendants are getting interneteducated. They want to know from the doctors about their problems in detail and their possible solutions. In such situation, the medicos of today will have to be groomed to face their patients with sound and practical knowledge and sincere honest approach.
The book has been prepared keeping all above in mind and targeting the medical students of today's. Without any attempt to load over the students, efforts have been made to keep them aware about the advances (points only) with emphasis on the core subject.8
Attempts have been made to present the diagrams and figures self-explanatory as far as practicable. Today, no medical graduate is supposed to operate upon the orthopedic or trauma patients unless he/she has undergone a good lot of apprenticeship. However, they must know the basic principles of the main operations concerning orthopedics and trauma.
Sureshwar Pandey
9Acknowledgments
After writing extraordinary chapters in international encyclopedias and other standard well-received five books (with Japanese, American and Spanish editions), it was so difficult to come down to pen—Fundamentals of Orthopedics and Trauma, but for the pressing demands from my grandchildren Dr Kumar Sangam, Dr Pallavi Pandey and encouragement of the baby Doctors Shivam, Vaishnavi and Soumya; Shruti and Satyam. They guided me, pruned the superfluous portions, sized and corrected the manuscript. More than half of the efforts in preparing the book is theirs, so all the credit goes to them. Dr Sangam with his exhaustive knowledge has been of great help. Now the greatest source of energy for my academic work is Master Athru Parnjal (Kanha) my great grandson.
Our publisher, M/s Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi, India, with its worldwide expertise and reputation, has not only translated our desire but also decorated the book for national and international acceptance. We have humbly tried our best. There is always a room for improvement and we are very much open to that on the further feedback and criticism. The ultimate judgment is in the court of the young medicos of the world—the baby doctors.
