Foreword
It gives me great pleasure to introduce Spine and Spinal Orthoses and the author Major General (Dr) SK Jain.
There are many books on spine but there are hardly any publications available on the orthotic management of spinal conditions.
This book deals with the anatomy and biomechanics of the normal as well as pathological spine. It also describes various spinal disorders and how to manage them with the help of spinal orthoses, an aspect not really clearly understood. The language of the book is simple and the text is well illustrated. It describes various difficult and complicated aspects very clearly and precisely.
The book is an excellent handbook not only for the clinicians, rehabilitation medicine consultants and orthopedic surgeons but also for orthotists, prosthetists and physiotherapists. It would also be useful for students of surgery, orthopedic surgery and students of orthotics and prosthetics as well as physiotherapy.
Major General (Dr) SK Jain is a Senior Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine as well as Surgery. He is also a qualified Mechanical Engineer (MPhil) from London, and has utilized his knowledge and skills in designing various orthoses for spinal conditions.

This is an attempt to compile a book on anatomy, biomechanics, pathological conditions and their orthotic management of spine. A concise book on this subject is not readily available. This is our first attempt to compile a book on this subject.
The book is therefore published presuming that the diagnosis has been made. However, a brief description of the pathological conditions of spine has been given to bring out the salient features, to select the most suitable orthosis for the condition. Line drawings have been chosen in preference to the photographs, so that the essential features can be clearly shown.
It is hoped that the book will be helpful to prosthetic and orthotic students, medical students, practicing doctors, pediatricians, surgeons, as well as orthopedic surgeons and physiatrists. It should assist them to choose the best method of orthotic management, most suitable for a particular patient.
