11Foreword
Today nurses are not merely restricted to providing bedside care to sick and injured hospitalized patients but they have more challenging expansions and extensions of their role in healthcare delivery system. Nurses are actively involved in the treatment and care of sick and injured people either as acute care nurse practitioners or as family health nurse practitioners. In view of this gradually widening horizon of nursing, it is crucial for nurses to acquire knowledge of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug doses, routes, adverse effects and nurses’ role in administration of common drugs. In addition, also to understand disease etiology, genetic basis of disorders, pathogenesis, morphological and histopathological changes, clinical presentation, diagnostic methodologies and their interpretation in various diseases. The curriculum prescribed by Indian Nursing Council (INC) has given adequate coverage to the content area from the subjects of pharmacology, pathology and genetics. However, there is scarcity of good quality of literature on the subject of pathology, pharmacology and genetics for Nurses, which is suitable to Indian nurses needs. Therefore, I feel that this book titled ‘Textbook of Pharmacology, Pathology and Genetics for Nurses’ will fill the gap in the literature on pedagogy that is tailored to particular needs of undergraduate nursing students of India. This book is a modest attempt to present the content related to subjects of pharmacology, pathology and genetics in a lucid and comprehensive manner. I, therefore, commend its Editor, Prof Suresh K Sharma, as well as contributors for this unique contribution with an Indian background in the area of pharmacology, pathology and genetics. I further, commend that this book will cater to the needs of the Indian undergraduate nursing students and faculty; it may even be used by postgraduate nursing students and other healthcare professionals.

13Preface
Pharmacology, Pathology and Genetics are the diverse, important part of health sciences in the study of disease. New research in pharmacology, pathology and genetics allows easier, faster diagnosis, treatment and care of patient suffering with diverse disease conditions. Nurses today are not merely restricted to provide bedside care to sick and injured hospitalized patients; they have more challenging expansions and extensions of their role in healthcare delivery system. Nurses are actively involved in treatment and care of sick and injured people either as acute care nurse practitioners or as family health nurse practitioners. In view of this, gradually widening horizon of nursing, it is crucial for nurses to acquire knowledge of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug doses, routes, adverse effects and nurses role in administration of common drugs. In addition, also to understand disease etiology, genetic basis of disorders, pathogenesis, morphological and histopathological changes, clinical presentation, diagnostic methodologies and their interpretation in various diseases.
Furthermore, understanding molecular and clinical human genetic principles and concepts for nursing practice is relevant in assisting nurses to understand disease, assess risk for disease, provide a scientific foundation for the care they provide and promote health and wellness among patients and their families. Today, a foundational knowledge of the principles, practices, and psychosocial implications of genetics is essential to basic nursing care.
There is sacristy of comprehensive, simple and lucid literature on the subject of pharmacology, pathology and genetics, which nurses can easily understand, interpret and utilize in nursing care practices. Therefore, it is a modest attempt to bring much needed simple, comprehensive and learner-friendly content of pharmacology, pathology and genetics. Textbook of Pharmacology, Pathology and Genetics for Nurses is not intended to be exhaustive of the pharmacology, pathology and genetic issues important for nurses. Instead, it is meant to provide insight, food for thought, into some of the human response, care delivery, and professional issues nurses will be required to grapple with today and in the coming years in regard to these disciplines. This book will be ready reference for the nursing faculty and students in the subject of pharmacology, pathology and genetics since it is based on syllabus prescribed by Indian Nursing Council, AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, RAKCON (DU) and other national and international universities.
Dr Suresh K Sharma14
15Acknowledgments
It is a bit misleading to conclude that a book is produced solely by the person whose name appears on the cover. Help and support are needed from many people on both professional and personal front to complete a project of this magnitude. The advices and inputs from my teachers, mentors, colleagues and fellows from India and abroad are invaluable. I must thank my colleagues from the National Institute of Nursing Education, PGIMER, Chandigarh, College of Nursing, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Rishikesh for their kind support and valuable suggestions. I am thankful to my wife Reena Sharma, daughter, Simone Sharma and son Rishit Sharma who provided me constant encouragement to keep going, even as they reminded me that there is life beyond the pages of a book. Above all, I also thank my father Sh Badri Narayan Sharma, whose unconditional love and belief in my capabilities provided me energy to bring the textbook of this magnitude.
The help from editorial team of Jaypee Brothers Medical Publishers (P) Ltd, New Delhi is worth appreciable in merging the interests of the editor with those of producers of a book that others would want to read.
