7Foreword
Skin is a living barrier between ourselves and the outside world. This largest organ of the human body, comprising of 15% of the total body weight, forms an effective barrier against invasion of the body by microorganisms and protects against loss of water. Part of our first line defence system is the non-specific mechanical barrier provided by the skin.
Skin diseases today constitute about 10 to 15% of the general practitioner's workload. The incidence of eczemas and allergic dermatoses is increasing every year, due to the ever-expanding range of cosmetics, detergents, dyes and chemicals.
The dermatologist is no more a “pimple and itch doctor” but is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of serious diseases such as leprosy, skin cancers, exfoliative dermatitis and pemphigus. Due to recent impressive progress in this specialty, our understanding of skin diseases has considerably expanded. Dermatology, once a neglected subject, has now achieved the status it deserves. The old saying identifying dermatology with tons of Latin and ounces of vaseline is no more true. Corticosteroids have revolutionized the treatment of skin diseases. Therapy of cutaneous diseases may well be divided into: BC and AC (before corticosteroids and after corticosteroids).
Now, dermatologists have to cope up with the recent knowledge about genetic diseases, genes, RNA and DNA markers, etc. well and in the future the genetic dermatological 8diseases which may be cured can be prevented before birth. This monograph includes concise and clinically relevant information on commonly encountered skin diseases. There are quite a few books on dermatology but like paintings by different artists, each is different from the others. I am of the conviction that this book with typical photographs should be of immense use for general practitioners and dermatologists who do like to accept responsibility of the patient's skin condition once the consultant has given his opinion. I am sure that this interesting book will stimulate further reading on skin diseases and no doubt it would be a welcome addition to the current literature on dermatology.

9Preface to the Second Edition
Since publication of the first edition in 2010 and pharmaceutical edition 2014, there have bean persisting demands for the revised edition in the previous years. There have been considerable advances in the field of dermatological therapy beside the understanding of the subject has been revolutionized.
My personal opinion is that emphasis should be made on clinical practice of the subject rather than on long winded hypothesis and jungle of terminology.
This book incorporates and encompasses the advances in the subject. The text has been modernized, expanded, revised and made up-to-date.
The dermatitis eczema, pyoderma, psoriasis, tuberculosis, vitiligo, melasma, and antiaging are completely revised and necessary additions have been made. New flowcharts and new clinical photographs have been added.
The book contains subject matter in a comprehensive manner with emphasis on clinical and etiological diagnosis, prognosis and treatment in all practical details as would be required by both basic doctor and specialist in this day-to-day practice.
I hope the second edition of Diagnosis and Management of Dermatologic Disorders Made Easy will help students and medical practioners to understand the vast subject of skin diseases and therapy and render service to the patients at large.
The father of nation Mahatma Gandhi gave stress to the eradication of leprosy and he washed the leprosy ulcers of Acharya Parchure.
10Late prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru emphasized on the cure of vitiligo and leukoderma.
Prime minister Narendra Modi has given a slogan “Clean and Healthy India”, the cleaning of the house and environment will prevent bacterial parasite infections like scabies, lice infestations, house mites, and dust that causes allergy, asthmas, itching and another skin diseases can be prevented by cleanliness. “Cleanliness is next to Godliness” is a common sense. I end with the following Vedic prayer:
“Oh God I don't want any kingdom nor desire to get a heaven,
I opt that my hands should cure and serve the poor and needy at large”.
SK Punshi
11Preface to the First Edition
“I do not ask you either your opinion or
your religion but what is your sufferings.”
— L Pasteur
“For the uninitiated dermatology is difficult. Diagnosis seems impossible because different things look exactly the same and the similar things appear entirely different. Even when similar things turn out to be the same, there remains the problem of names,” Mit Chell MD Practitioner 208, 597 (1972). Considering the above dictum, I have simplified the subject of dermatology for the students, general practitioners and dermatologists, especially working in rural and urban areas.
This book is more or less like a ready-reckoner and is meant for rapid reading.
I am not an expert diver, hence I could not dive deep into the bottom of vast and unfathomable ocean of dermatology hence could not bring out pearls. But I am confident I have collected a few pebbles while sitting and silently playing at the bank of river of dermatology.
In this book I have incorporated a few essays on most common topics which we see and confront in day-to-day practice hence I have not followed the standard textbook classification.
This book is concise, succinct, and aptly illustrated with clinical photographs. The treatment part is up-to-date.
12I end these few words with them following Vedic prayer:
“Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah
Sarve Santu Niramayah,
Sarve Bhadrani Pashyantu
Makashchid Dukh Bhag Bhavet”
Oh Lord! Keep all healthy and happy. Keep us all free from disease and decay, pain and sufferings. Please Lord, give us peace and bliss.
SK Punshi
