FM11Preface
The increasing prevalence of diabetes in India is a matter of concern. According to the latest statistics, the combined burden of diabetes and pre-diabetes in our country is more than 130 million.
Several books have been written on the diabetes epidemic. Journals have extolled the triumphant march of the diabetes epidemic and informed us about the latest treatments for it. Prominent lectures by nationally and internationally renowned speakers continue to remind us of the excellent advances in diabetes care.
However, what is also needed, is more information on one particular aspect - when the person with diabetes sits in front of the doctor, only one question crosses the treating physician's mind- how can I make this patient's life better?
Recognizing the vast expanse of the therapeutic paradigm in diabetes, we sought to bring out this clinical case compendium, which essentially attempts to use best practices with experience, in a few selected, focused scenarios. We do realize that it is impossible to cover all clinical scenarios and have thus focused on a few selected ones.
We thank the authors for enriching the content of this compendium with their clinical experience, which helps them use the best scientific evidence with clinical realities in countries like India.
We hope that you will not only enjoy this compilation, rather this book will also provoke debate and discussion amongst you, your colleagues, and readers, on how best to manage people with diabetes. This book is our humble attempt to help those suffering from diabetes and its complications. We dedicate this book to them.
