7Preface to the Fourth Edition
In writing the fourth edition of Biochemistry, I have well balanced the desire to present up to the minute advances with the need to make biochemistry as clear and friendly as possible for the students approaching the subject for the first time.
Consistent with my goal of providing students with a text that describes and illustrates biochemistry in a medically relevant up-to-date, comprehensive, and yet relatively concise manner, in addition to updating every chapter with latest concept, significant new material appears in this edition.
The major efforts for this edition have been taken to update the chapters biological oxidation, metabolism in starvation, replication, transcription, translation, and organ function tests. Each chapter consists of learning objectives at the beginning which point-wise outlines what is to be learned in the particular chapter.
In addition, in response to reviewer recommendations, sections in many chapters have been reorganized for a better flow of information. Related content of molecular biology () that in previous edition was presented in three chapters, have been now presented into five different chapters. To facilitate the students learning, I have added several new features:
  • A glossary with precise definitions serves as a ready-reference to the most common words in the ever-growing language of biochemical sciences.
  • A list of reference/normal values appears at the end of the book.
  • Clinical correlations based on biochemical conditions, wherever occurs in each chapter are presented in a colored box.
  • Inclusion of additional multiple choice examination questions with answers and clinical case studies given at end of the chapters since these have proved to be a very popular component of the book.
The text has been so presented that the students would find it easy to attempt any question in the form of objective type, multiple choices or essay type after going through the text. After reading this book, I would like you to send me your feedback. I will be highly obliged, if you can send me your comments, criticisms and suggestions at pankajanaik@hotmail.com. Let me know how well, I am meeting your needs!
