IntroductionCHAPTER 1

The skin in the genital area is an extension of the skin elsewhere in the body and can be affected by common skin disorders that can affect other areas along with genital area incidentally or can present in the genital areas with unusual features. It can also be affected by conditions that are completely or predominantly confined to this area. As a sexual organ, these areas can also harbor many sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Most of the disorders affecting the vulva and penis are dermatological, modified by anatomical, hormonal, and microbiological influences. They more often have multifactorial etiology than dermatoses affecting other areas of the body. There is a peculiar challenge in the management of these disorders because majority of the problems are dermatological and the specialists predominantly treating it are gynecologists, urologists, genitourinary physicians, who would have had little or no training in dermatology.
